Infrastructure Support

The Clinical Epidemiology Program (CEP) Methods Centre was recently created to support, train, and mentor scientists and health professionals interested in doing clinical research. The CEP Methods Centre is part of the Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI), the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and an affiliated research institute of the University of Ottawa. Led by Dr. Timothy O. Ramsay, the Methods Centre includes a number of experts in clinical trial design, data management, and statistics.

Data Management Services

The CEP Methods Centre data management group currently consists of fulltime database programmers, data forms designers, data entry personnel, and a fulltime manager. This group can provide expertise on how best to capture, store, and manage data, including:

  • Design of case report forms
  • Design of data capture methods (paper-based, web-based, faxed data, hand-held data entry devices etc.)
  • Design and maintenance of databases
  • Design and execution of database queries
  • Security of databases and data transfer devices
  • Linking and merging of databases

Statistical Consulting

The Statistical Consulting group consists of PhD scientists and MSc statisticians. This group provides the following services:

  • Study sample size and power calculations
  • Interim reporting for clinical trials
  • Systematic reviews
  • Analysis of data sets
  • Development of analytical plans
  • Results interpretation and analysis

Methodological Support

There are four PhD methodologists employed as part of the Methods Centre and several other clinical scientists with expertise in study design including randomized clinical trials, surveys and quality of life scales. There is one PhD Health Economist as a member of the Methods Centre and he consults on issues of health economics. This group provides the following services:

  • Protocol development
  • Study design clinical trials and observational studies
  • Systematic reviews
  • Survey design
  • Large administrative database mining
  • Quality of life instruments
  • Clinical research ethics
  • Health economic analyses
  • Decision analyses

Education

The expansion of the Methods Centre will provide many educational services to departments of the The Ottawa Hospital, including:

  • Training: The staff of the CEP Methods Centre will develop a series of ongoing training seminars targeting residents and interns about research and study methodology. The seminar series is part of resident education days and will assist in fulfilling the academic mandate of The Ottawa Hospital. Specific training programs can be developed upon request.
  • Supporting interns and residents: The Methods Centre will pro- vide support for interns’ and residents’ research projects through consultation sessions with the appropriate experts to advise on the design and organization of the study and interpretation of results.
