    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Scientist

    Dr. Bill Cameron is a Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and Professor, Faculty of Medicine at The University of Ottawa. Dr. Cameron is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, an Academic Editor at Public Library of Science ONE and Associate Editor for Open Medicine.

    He is known for his work in the study of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. He has identified and published findings which associated chancroid with sexual HIV transmission, and showed a biological facilitation of sexual HIV transmission due to chancroid and circumcision status of men.  He has since sustained a productive and well-funded clinical and linked laboratory research career, with a number of seminal and first tier contributions. He is a widely respected physician, researcher and teacher in his field.

    Dr. Cameron is presently leading a Canadian collaborative research network in South and East Africa and leading the development of a clinical collaboration between theUniversityofOttawaat The Ottawa Hospital and The University of Guyana/ The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

    Marc Carrier MD FRCPC MSc

    Vice Chair, Research, Department of Medicine

    Dr. Marc Carrier is the current Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Medicine, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program of The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He holds a Tier 2 Research Chair in Venous Thromboembolism and Cancer from the University of Ottawa and New Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. In 2015 he was the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Michel Chrétien Researcher of the Year Award for his study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that improves care for VTE patients around the world.

    Clinical research is focused in venous thromboembolic disease and cancer, including cancer screening, prevention and management. Is currently the Principal Investigator on four peer-reviewed clinical trials (Heart and Stroke Foundation (2) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2) ) and numerous industry sponsored trials. He has published important systematic reviews and has had multiple international speaking invitations to speak on the topics of cancer and thrombosis.

  • Lana Castellucci MD FRCPC MSc

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Lana Castellucci is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and an Associate Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She completed Internal Medicine training at the University of Ottawa, a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Calgary, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in Thrombosis with a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa.

    Clinical research is focused on hospitalized patients and critically ill patients, particularly in the prevention, diagnosis and management of bleeding and venous thromboembolism. Dr. Castellucci is currently the Principal Investigator on a peer-reviewed clinical trial (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) comparing two new blood thinners to determine the safest treatment of acute venous thromboembolism. She is also a Co-Principal Investigator on a peer-reviewed clinical trial (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)) comparing Warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants for secondary prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism.

    Physician Bio

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Educator

    Dr. Chan is a Toronto MD who completed a M.Ed in Ottawa whilst a Clinical Scholar at OISE. He continues research in the use of video technology for student/resident evaluation in OSCE settings. His current clinical interest centres on an innovative pre-operative assessment tool, which enables a link to the post-operative period for outcome measurement. Dr. Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine. His career track is as a Clinician-educator with the Faculty of Medicine.

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Raphael Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa with a Clinician-Teacher academic career track.

    Dr. Chan is also a Palliative Care physician for the Palliative Care Unit and the Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultation Service at Bruyère Continuing Care; as well as, The Ottawa Hospital Palliative Care Consultation Service.

    Dr. Chan attended medical school at the University of British Columbia from 1994-1998. From 1998-2000, he continued his studies in the Rural Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of British Columbia with rotations in Vernon, Kelowna and Creston (British Columbia) and Inuvik (Northwest Territories). From 2000-2003, he worked in family practice in the remote city of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Following three years of full service family practice, he decided to pursue fellowship training in the Palliative Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa.

    In November 2004, Dr. Chan joined the Division of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa. His current work now concentrates on clinical responsibilities and teaching medical students, residents and clinical fellows in the University of Ottawa’s teaching hospitals.

  • Justine Chan MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Justine Chan has been appointed to the Department of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, effective January 2017.

    Dr. Chan obtained her Bachelor of Science at the University of Ottawa where she was silver medallist of her class in 2005.  She completed her undergraduate medical education at the University of Toronto in 2009.  She returned to Ottawa to complete her residency in General Internal Medicine in 2013.  After completing her residency, she worked as a part-time academic at the Ottawa Hospital and was involved in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

    She joins the Division of General Internal Medicine this year as a full-time academic with plans to continue to be an active and passionate member of the Ottawa Hospital teaching community.  She is the Associate Clerkship Director for the Internal Medicine rotation at the Civic Campus.  She is also participating in the University of Ottawa Distinguished Teacher Program.
