    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Raphael Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa with a Clinician-Teacher academic career track.

    Dr. Chan is also a Palliative Care physician for the Palliative Care Unit and the Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultation Service at Bruyère Continuing Care; as well as, The Ottawa Hospital Palliative Care Consultation Service.

    Dr. Chan attended medical school at the University of British Columbia from 1994-1998. From 1998-2000, he continued his studies in the Rural Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of British Columbia with rotations in Vernon, Kelowna and Creston (British Columbia) and Inuvik (Northwest Territories). From 2000-2003, he worked in family practice in the remote city of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Following three years of full service family practice, he decided to pursue fellowship training in the Palliative Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa.

    In November 2004, Dr. Chan joined the Division of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa. His current work now concentrates on clinical responsibilities and teaching medical students, residents and clinical fellows in the University of Ottawa’s teaching hospitals.

  • Avijit Chatterjee MD

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Chatterjee is an Interventional Gastroenterologist at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH). He obtained his medical degree from McGill University and went on to complete both his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at the University of Toronto. He completed a Fellowship in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy (ATE) at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto and pursued further training in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) at the Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth, Australia. He started working at TOH in 2009 and has developed the GI EUS program as well as the ATE Fellowship program at TOH. Dr. Chatterjee has recently joined the Board of Directors for the Ontario Gastroenterology Association.

    Dr. Chatterjee’s clinical interests include management of pancreaticobiliary disorders and minimally invasive diagnostics and therapeutics. Finally, he is an Associate Scientist with the OHRI with an interest in translational research in GI Oncology, particularly pancreatic cancer.

  • Sharon Chih MBBS FRACP PhD

    Career Orientation: Clinician-Investigator

    Dr. Chih attended medical school at the University of Western Australia. After training in cardiology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (Perth, Australia), she completed a PhD at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (Sydney, Australia) followed by a fellowship in advanced heart

    failure and transplantation at the University of Toronto. She returned to Perth as a Heart Failure-Transplant Cardiologist in 2012. Her areas of research interest include allosensitization, antibody mediated rejection and heart failure-transplant cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Scientist

    Michel Chrétien received his medical degree from the University of Montréal in 1960. This was followed by his post-graduate studies at McGill and Harvard Universities (Peter Bent Brigham Hospital) at the University of California in Berkeley and UCSF. He spent a sabbatical year at the Salk Institute and at Cambridge University (UK). He returned to Canada in 1967 to the Clinical Research Institute of Montréal (IRCM). From 1984 to 1994, he was Scientific Director of the Institute. From January 1998 to April 2001, he was Scientific Director of the Loeb Health Research Institute at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. In 2005 he founded the Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology.

    Michel Chrétien is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    Michel Chrétien has received five Honoris Causa: in 1980 from the Université de Liège in Belgium; in 1992 from the Université René Descartes in Paris; in 1996 from the Laurentian University in Sudbury; in 1999 from the University of Guelph; and in May 2000 from Memorial University in Newfoundland.

    In 2004, PrĂ©sident Chirac named him Chevalier de la LĂ©gion d’Honneur de la RĂ©publique Française. He is Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. He is Officer of the Order of Canada (1986) and of the l’Ordre national du QuĂ©bec (1994).

    In Canada, he received the Izaak-Walton-Killam Memorial Prize (1995), the Henry Friesen Award (1999) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Medal of Honour (1999) given by Canada’s Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies, the ActualitĂ© MĂ©dicale Medal of Scientific Merit (2000) and the Archambault Medal (1978) from the Association canadienne française pour l’avancement des sciences (ACFAS). The Royal Society of Canada honoured him with its McLaughlin Medal (1993), the Canadian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CSBMB) with its Boehringer-Mannheim Award (1993), and the Manning Foundation (Calgary) with its Award of Distinction (1995). In the United States, he was the Fuller Albright lecturer (1992) of the Peripatetic Club and the Metzger lecturer of the American Clinical and Climatological Association (1990). Throughout his distinguished career, he was member of many scientific societies, committees and boards including the UNESCO International Scientific Advisory Committee, the Medical Research Council of Canada and the Ontario Science and Innovation Council.

    Trained as a physician, Michel ChrĂ©tien made many of his scientific contributions in basic science. In 1967, he proposed the pro-hormone theory. In 1976, he discovered human ?-endorphin. In 1990, his group identified the proprotein convertases, enzymes that are involved in a number of debilitating conditions including: hypercholesterolemia, cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s and viral disorders like SARS, influenza, HIV/AIDS and Chronic fatigue syndrome. His research is expected to produce novel approaches not only to diagnose and treat these illnesses but to prevent them. He has presented hundreds of lectures around the world. To date, he has published more than 575 scientific articles.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    A McGill graduate in Medicine, Dr. Clark is currently Program Director for the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program. She has an extensive administrative profile and an epidemiology background. She was one of our Clinical Scholars in Epidemiology and remains an affiliate investigator with OHRI. She is an Examiner for the RCP Fellowship Examinations. Her major clinical interest is Obstetrical Medicine. She is Associate Professor and her career track is as a Clinician-investigator with the Faculty of Medicine.

  • Mark Clemons MD FRCP (UK)

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr Mark Clemons graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K. (B.Med.Sci; MB BS). He completed his post-doctoral training in internal medicine and medical oncology at theHammersmithHospital,London;ChristieHospital,Manchester(MSc, Oncology; MD, Oncology) and at thePrincessMargaretHospital,Toronto. He is currently a Clinical Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (Cancer Therapeutics Program), staff medical oncologist (Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre) and Associate Professor (UniversityofOttawa). A proponent of high quality clinical trials research, he is involved in a large number of experimental therapeutic studies for patients with early stage, locally advanced and metastatic breast cancer. He is the recipient of multiple peer-reveiwed research grants and is widely published in the field of breast cancer management. He is internationally recognised for his work on using tumour and serum biomarkers to improve the management of patients with locally advanced and metastatic breast cancer. His work on strategies to improve tissue acquisition during systemic therapy have also improved the assessment of both the efficacy of novel therapeutic agents but also innovative ways of administering established agents. His research vision is to focus specifically on moving biomarker studies into the clinic to provide individualized patient-tailored care.
