    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Shirley H. Bush is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa, a Clinical Scientist at the √Člisabeth Bruy√®re Research Institute and a Palliative Care physician at Bruy√®re Continuing Care, Ottawa.

    Her primary research interests include delirium, quality-of-life assessments in advanced cancer patients and medical undergraduate education. She is the principal investigator of an AIME grant, ‚ÄėEvaluating the New Medical Undergraduate Palliative Care Curriculum at the University of Ottawa‚Äô.

    Dr. Bush obtained her medical degree from St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, University of London and vocationally trained as a General Practitioner in London, UK. She then gained experience working in different palliative care, oncology and paediatric units in New Zealand, and completed specialist training in Palliative Medicine with a further year of palliative medicine in Sydney, Australia. She subsequently worked as a Senior Staff Specialist in Palliative Care for Southern Health Care Network, Melbourne, Australia for 8 years with her role including consultative/ liaison work in addition to working in McCulloch House, a busy tertiary level inpatient unit. During this period, she was also the Palliative Care Physician for South East Palliative Care, a specialist community palliative care organization.

    Dr. Bush completed a year as Visiting Scientist in the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA, with Dr. Eduardo Bruera before taking up her current position in Ottawa in April 2009.

    As a pastime, she is a passionate Argentine Tango and Flamenco dancer.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Educator

    Dr. Byszewski is Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Division of Geriatric Medicine. obtained her medical degree from the University of Ottawa, where she also continued her training in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. She obtained a Master’s of Education in Health Professions from OISE (UT).

    Dr. Byszewski’s areas of interest include medical education including translation of knowledge and evaluation. Dr. Byszewski is involved with developing and teaching communication skills and professionalism in the medical curriculum, in her role as Director of Professionalism, Undergraduate Curriculum, University of Ottawa. She is also acore competency expert for the ePortfolio program and leads Faculty Development for this program .

    Dr. Byszewski has been involved in leadinginitiaives in geriatric medicine inosteoporosis, and driving/caregiving issues in dementia. She has led the development and implementation of the Cognitive Change care map in the Geriatric Day Hospital . She chaired a task group for the Dementia Network of Ottawa that produced the Driving and Dementia Toolkit, a resource manual for health care workers dealing with this issue. The toolkit has been formally evaluated and is now available in generic form for adaptation in different regions, with a recently updated 3rd edition. A companion Patient and Caregiver Driving Toolkit has also been developed. They are both available at www.rgpeo.com.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Scientist

    Dr. Bill Cameron is a Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and Professor, Faculty of Medicine at The University of Ottawa. Dr. Cameron is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, an Academic Editor at Public Library of Science ONE and Associate Editor for Open Medicine.

    He is known for his work in the study of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. He has identified and published findings which associated chancroid with sexual HIV transmission, and showed a biological facilitation of sexual HIV transmission due to chancroid and circumcision status of men.  He has since sustained a productive and well-funded clinical and linked laboratory research career, with a number of seminal and first tier contributions. He is a widely respected physician, researcher and teacher in his field.

    Dr. Cameron is presently leading a Canadian collaborative research network in South and East Africa and leading the development of a clinical collaboration between theUniversityofOttawaat The Ottawa Hospital and The University of Guyana/ The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

    Marc Carrier MD FRCPC MSc

    Vice Chair, Research, Department of Medicine

    Dr. Marc Carrier is the current Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Medicine, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program of The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He holds a Tier 2 Research Chair in Venous Thromboembolism and Cancer from the University of Ottawa and New Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. In 2015 he was the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Michel Chrétien Researcher of the Year Award for his study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that improves care for VTE patients around the world.

    Clinical research is focused in venous thromboembolic disease and cancer, including cancer screening, prevention and management. Is currently the Principal Investigator on four peer-reviewed clinical trials (Heart and Stroke Foundation (2) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2) ) and numerous industry sponsored trials. He has published important systematic reviews and has had multiple international speaking invitations to speak on the topics of cancer and thrombosis.

    Dr. Lana Castellucci is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and an Associate Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She completed Internal Medicine training at the University of Ottawa, a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Calgary, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in Thrombosis with a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa.

    Clinical research is focused on hospitalized patients and critically ill patients, particularly in the prevention, diagnosis and management of bleeding and venous thromboembolism. Dr. Castellucci is currently the Principal Investigator on a peer-reviewed clinical trial (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) comparing two new blood thinners to determine the safest treatment of acute venous thromboembolism. She is also a Co-Principal Investigator on a peer-reviewed clinical trial (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)) comparing Warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants for secondary prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism.
