  • Xin Xiong MDCM, FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Xin Xiong has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, effective November 2017.

    Dr. Xiong obtained his M.D.C.M degree for undergraduate medical education at McGill University. He then continued and completed his postgraduate Internal Medicine training at McGill University. Subsequently, he has completed his adult Gastroenterology residency training at University of Toronto. With a particular interest in Clinical Hepatology, Dr. Xiong pursued and completed his fellowship in Clinical Hepatology at Toronto Center for Liver Diseases, University of Toronto.

    Dr. Xiong practices hepatology and gastroenterology at The Ottawa Hospital, mainly located at the Civic Campus. His main clinical interest consists of general hepatology, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, Dr. Xiong has developed a growing interest in medical education, and is currently completing masters in medical education at University of Dundee. His research and education interest involves improvement in medical education and curriculum design in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology, for both undergraduate and postgraduate learners.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Deborah Zimmerman, MD, FRCP(C), is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at The Ottawa Hospital and theUniversityofOttawa. Dr. Zimmerman received her undergraduate university training, M.D. and Internal Medicine Residency at theUniversityofCalgary. After completing her clinical nephrology fellowship at theUniversityofToronto, she enrolled in the Masters program in Clinical Epidemiology which she completed in 2001.

    Research InterestsDr. Zimmerman’s focus of clinical research is the morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease in the hemodialysis population. Other areas of interest include benefits of daily therapies, vascular access and the management of metabolic renal bone disease in the hemodialysis population. 

    Educational InterestsTo date, the majority of Dr. Zimmerman’s educational focus has been on undergraduate and post graduate nephrology teaching. However, future goals are to assist in the development of future clinical investigators.

  • Lionel Zuckier MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Lionel Zuckier is a widely respected expert in nuclear medicine and PET imaging. Originally hailing from Calgary, Dr. Zuckier attended medical school in New York at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, graduating in 1982. He subsequently continued his training in Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology at Einstein and was recipient of a 5-year N.I.H. Physician-Scientist Award studying B-Cell immunology in the laboratory of Dr. Mathew Scharff. After staying on faculty for a total of 12 years, Dr. Zuckier was recruited to the New Jersey Medical School as Director of Nuclear Medicine and founding Director of PET. Prior to his arrival in Ottawa he most recently served as Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania and was Section Chief of Nuclear Medicine at the affiliated V.A. Hospital.

    Dr. Zuckier holds boards in the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, the American Board of Radiology, and the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology and was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Nuclear Medicine in 1986.

    Dr. Zuckier has published in the multiple fields in nuclear medicine and PET and has held basic science and clinical research grants from government and industry. He has served on numerous editorial boards and professional committees including the American Board of Radiology and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.
