    Faculty Career Path: clinician scientist

    Dr. Grégoire Le Gal is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, a clinician-scientist in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology, and a senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Clinical Epidemiology program. Born in France, Dr. Le Gal received his M.D. degree from the University of Brest, France, in 1997, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 2004. He received a Ph.D. degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Brest in 2007. He received fellowship training in Internal Medicine in Brest University Hospital, France, in Angiology in Geneva University Hospital, Switzerland, and completed a clinical and research fellowship in Thrombosis at the University of Ottawa in 2008. Dr. Le Gal went back to France and was appointed as a Professor of Internal Medicine at Brest University, before returning to Ottawa earlier this year. His research interests are in the areas of clinical diagnosis, diagnostic strategies and management of venous thromboembolism.

    Marc A. Rodger MD FRCPC MSc (Epidemiology)

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Scientist

    Dr. Marc Rodger, M.D., FRCP(C), MSc. is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Departments of Medicine, Epidemiology and Community Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is the Head of the Division of Hematology and the Head of the Thrombosis Program. He is a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He holds a Faculty of Medicine Clinical Research Chair in Venous Thrombosis and Thrombophilia and a Career Scientist Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

    Dr. Rodger received his B.Sc from McGill University and his M.D., M.Sc. (Clinical Epidemiology) from the University of Ottawa. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Hematology and Thrombosis at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Rodger’s research program is focused on Venous Thrombosis and Thrombophilia, with specific focus on (1) Thrombosis/ Thrombophilia in Pregnancy and (2) Optimal Management of Venous Thrombosis. Dr. Rodger founded the General Campus Thrombosis Program in 1998, led the successful merger with the Civic Campus Thrombosis Program founded by Dr. Wells in 2002, and led the development of the Champlain LHIN Regional Thrombosis Program which was launched in 2010. As Chief of Hematology, Dr. Rodger also led the development of The Ottawa Blood Disease Centre: A state of the art world class facility housing the clinical, research, teaching and administrative components of the Division of Hematology. The center opened in 2012.

  • Mitchell Sabloff MD FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Sabloff is an assistant professor of Medicine and a clinical hematologist in the Division of Hematology and the Director of the Leukemia Program at the Ottawa Hospital. He completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree and then obtained his medical degree at McGill University.  He then trained at Queen’s University in Internal Medicine and completed his Hematology and Stem Cell Transplant training at the University of Ottawa. Since starting on staff at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa in 2002, he has focused his practice on malignant hematology. In 2006, he became the Director of the LeukemiaProgram and has taken many steps to improve the care of patients with acute leukemia and myelodysplasia in the Ottawa region. He has developed a specialized multidisciplinary clinic for these patients which has helped to streamline their care. He has been instrumental at helping to set up two support groups for these patients. Dr. Sabloff has developed databases and helped start the Malignant Hematology Tissue Bank at the Ottawa Hospital, both of which serve to support research in the area.   He has initiated clinical trials with others both locally as well as across other centres, nationally and internationally. Dr. Sabloff has published a number of papers in major hematology journals based on local as well as national and international data collaborating with others inthe area sof acute leukemia, aplastic anemia and stem cell transplantation

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Elianna Saidenberg received her medical degree from McMaster University and continued to do post-graduate education in internal medicine and hematology there. She came to uOttawa to complete fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine. She presently works as a clinical and laboratory hematologist. She is the assistant director of the Ottawa Regional Bleeding Disorders Program as well as The Ottawa Hospital Therapeutic Apheresis Program. Dr. Saidenberg is an active educator; teaching about hematology and transfusion at the undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education levels. She is a member of the Ottawa Hospital Centre for Transfusion Research. Her research activities focus on patient centred outcomes in transfusion medicine, quality assurance and transfusion utilization. She collaborates with colleagues in many different departments and supervises researchers at many different stages of career development. Dr. Saidenberg is also the Department of Medicine Patient Experience representative to The Ottawa Hospital.

    DIMITRI SCARVELIS MD CM FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Dimitri Scarvelis is a member of the Division of Hematology, and Director of the Hematology Residency Program at The Ottawa Hospital. Dr. Scarvelis obtained his BSc and M.D.C.M at McGill University and completed his Internal Medicine and Hematology training at McGill University. He then received clinical thrombosis fellowship training at The University of Ottawa. In addition to his clinical duties which include a hematology and thrombosis practice, Dr. Scarvelis is the hematology content expert for the University of Ottawa undergraduate medical program, and teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Together with his thrombosis program colleagues, he is developing the Thrombosis Regional Thrombosis program which will provide access to specialized thrombosis care to more patients closer to home.
