    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Elianna Saidenberg received her medical degree from McMaster University and continued to do post-graduate education in internal medicine and hematology there. She came to uOttawa to complete fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine. She presently works as a clinical and laboratory hematologist. She is the assistant director of the Ottawa Regional Bleeding Disorders Program as well as The Ottawa Hospital Therapeutic Apheresis Program. Dr. Saidenberg is an active educator; teaching about hematology and transfusion at the undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education levels. She is a member of the Ottawa Hospital Centre for Transfusion Research. Her research activities focus on patient centred outcomes in transfusion medicine, quality assurance and transfusion utilization. She collaborates with colleagues in many different departments and supervises researchers at many different stages of career development. Dr. Saidenberg is also the Department of Medicine Patient Experience representative to The Ottawa Hospital.

    DIMITRI SCARVELIS MD CM FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Dimitri Scarvelis is a member of the Division of Hematology, and Director of the Hematology Residency Program at The Ottawa Hospital. Dr. Scarvelis obtained his BSc and M.D.C.M at McGill University and completed his Internal Medicine and Hematology training at McGill University. He then received clinical thrombosis fellowship training at The University of Ottawa. In addition to his clinical duties which include a hematology and thrombosis practice, Dr. Scarvelis is the hematology content expert for the University of Ottawa undergraduate medical program, and teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Together with his thrombosis program colleagues, he is developing the Thrombosis Regional Thrombosis program which will provide access to specialized thrombosis care to more patients closer to home.

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Teacher

    Dr. John Scott is an Associate Professor in the Division of Palliative Care and is based at The Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Scott graduated from Medicine at the University of Toronto (1973) and interned at the University of Montreal. From 1975-8, he worked with Dr. Balfour Mount in developing Canada’s first palliative care program at the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University. He went on to undertake postgraduate studies in Theology (University of Toronto, M.Div. 1979) and Clinical Epidemiology (McMaster University 1982-5). He developed pioneer programs in the new discipline of Palliative Care at the University of Toronto (St. Michael’s Hospital and Women’s College Hospital) and McMaster University (St. Joseph’s Hospital).

    In 1988, Dr. Scott was recruited to Ottawa by Dr. John Seely, then Head of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Scott was appointed Head of a newly created Division of Palliative Medicine ‚Äď the first such academic division in Canada. He was Director of the clinical programs at both √Člisabeth Bruy√®re and Ottawa General hospitals and later became Vice-President of the SCO Hospital with responsibility for Palliative Care. During his tenure as Division Head (1988‚Äď1998), there was significant growth in academic activities (Canada‚Äôs first postgraduate training program in Palliative Medicine, creation of the University of Ottawa Institute of Palliative Care for clinical and educational research). There was also rapid expansion in clinical activities (the Regional Unit at √Člisabeth Bruy√®re became the largest unit in Canada, the Regional Pain and Symptom Management Team was developed for providing consultation throughout East Ontario).

    Dr. Scott was one of the founding members of the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians (its first Secretary-Treasurer), the Section of Palliative Care of OMA, and the Canadian Hospice/Palliative Care Association.

    Linda Scully MD FRCPC

    Dr. Scully has been a member of the Division of GI since 1986 and was the Chair of the Division from 2010 to 2013.

    Dr Scully’s main interest is in Clinical Hepatology, managing patients with all forms of chronic liver disease. Dr Scully was an Examiner in Gastroenterology for the Royal College and has held several posts, including Head of the Education Committee for the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease.

    Dr Scully graduated with honours from the University of  Toronto Medical School. After Internal medicine training in Toronto, Auckland  NZ and  Vancouver, she completed her GI Fellowship training at the University of Ottawa from 1981-83. She obtained scholarships from The R Samuel McLaughlan Foundation and MRC and spent 3 years as a Research fellow in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital, University of London, UK. This was followed by further Molecular Virology training at the University of Ottawa, supported by the MRC.  For several years she ran a molecular virology lab at The Canadian Blood Services, with special interest in Hepatitis B and C.  More recently she has focused on Clinical Hepatology and  the treatment and care of patients with advanced liver disease.

  • Sandeep Sehdev FRCPC

    Dr. Sandeep Sehdev has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology, effective August 2016.

    Dr. Sehdev obtained his MD at the University of Ottawa.  He began his Internal Medicine training at the Western University before his oncology training in Toronto, where he served as a Chief Resident in 1991.  He worked at the William Osler Health System serving Brampton, Etobicoke, Orangeville and environs from 1991-2016 where he was director of continuing health education (oncology) and the clinical trials program. He also served as CHE lead for the Community Oncologists of Metropolitan Toronto.

    Dr. Sehdev practices Medical Oncology at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre and the affiliated Ivan Greenberg Family Cancer Centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.  He is also a Clinical Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre.  His major disease sites include breast, genitourinary cancers and melanoma.  His interests lie in medical education, patient and community education, applications of technology in oncology and advocacy  He was a past Director of the Cancer Advocacy Coalition of Canada and a current Director of PACCT (Physician Alliance for Cancer Control and Treatment).
