    Alan Karovitch MD FRCPC MEd

    Division Head, General Internal Medicine

    Dr. Karovitch is an Associate Professor and McGill graduate with a Masters degree in Education and an award winning teacher. His wide ranging interests including Medicine and Thrombosis and he supervises our Internal Medicine Consulting Service to the Baffin region. He is a past Chair of the University Postgraduate Medicine Committee and is now Chair of the Department of Medicine Finance Committee.

  • Daniel Kobewka MD FRCPC

    Career Orientation: Clinician-Investigator

    Dr. Kobewka received his BSc (Hon) in Immunology and Infection followed by his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Alberta. He then came to Ottawa where he completed training in General Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa and then an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa.

    Dr. Kobewka practices General Internal Medicine at the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital and is appointed as a Clinical Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. His research focus is healthcare use at the end-of-life and physician-patient communication about end-of-life issues. He also has an interest in patient safety and identifying preventable medical errors at the end-of-life.

    Steve Kravcik is an outstanding Clinician-teacher, a McGill MD graduate with a MSc.(Epi) from the Ottawa program. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and has a continuing interest in HIV management. He is an Associate Professor, Clinician-teacher within the Faculty of Medicine.

  • Jerry Maniate MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Maniate was appointed as Vice President of Education for The Ottawa Hospital effective November 1, 2017.

    Dr. Maniate moved from Toronto where he was a community-­‐based clinician educator (General Internal Medicine) and the inaugural Chief of Medical Education, Research & Scholarship and Academic Director of the Medical Education Teaching Clinic at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (Toronto).    He has previously served  as the Assistant Director of Researchers at the Wilson Centre, Chair of the Faculty Council Education Committee and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto.  Dr. Maniate has had a long-­‐standing involvement with residency-­‐education starting when he served on the Executive Committee and as President of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (now known as Resident Doctors   of Canada) and more recently with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in association with its conferences (ICRE and IMELF), various committees and as a member of accreditation survey  teams.

    In reflection of his international educational activities and leadership, Dr. Maniate is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) CanMEDS Academy of Medical Educators. In 2016, he was appointed by Royal College International as Regional Director for Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Associate Regional Director (Faculty Development) for Kuwait.

    As an education researcher, Dr. Maniate is currently working in two main, yet intertwining areas of scholarship: 1) exploring the intended and unintended effects of globalization on medical education systems including (but not limited to) accreditation, assessment, governance, curriculum and health human resources planning; and 2) creating novel models of medical education and research/scholarship.

  • Peter Munene MDCM FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Peter Munene has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, effective November 1, 2017.

    Dr. Munene obtained his B. com with a specialization in Organizational Behavior prior to completing his studies in undergraduate medical education at McGill University. He went on to pursue a residency in internal medicine at the University of Toronto prior to returning to Ottawa where he completed a two year fellowship in General Internal Medicine.

    During his fellowship, Dr. Munene completed a Master’s degree in Healthcare Quality from Queen’s University. His research interests lie in patient safety and quality improvement in end of life care. Dr. Munene is also heavily involved in medical education, particularly developing a Quality and Patient Safety curriculum for trainees at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
