    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Educator

    Dr. Johnson obtained his MD (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Ottawa in 1998. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Ottawa before pursuing additional fellowship training in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology. His hospital practice at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital focuses on clinical cardiology and non-invasive cardiac imaging. He performs diagnostic coronary angiography at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. As a clinician teacher at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Johnson is active in teaching at all levels from first year medical students to cardiology fellows. His education roles include Associate Program Director for the Core Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, Cardiology Education Coordinator for the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, he sits on a number of local and provincial education committees, and he is regularly invited to speak at conferences related to cardiology education.

  • Andres Klein MD

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Andres Klein has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the division of Cardiology at the Arrhythmia Service, effective August 2018.

    Dr. Klein completed his studies in undergraduate medical education (Hons) at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He began his Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at Instituto Cardiovascular de Buenos Aires (ICBA), Argentina completing a six years training, including a two years program in arrhythmias and electrophysiology.

    In 2014, he completed a 30 months training as an electrophysiology fellow at Sherbrooke University, Quebec.

    After he finished his training he worked as an Electrophysiology staff at Buenos Aires British Hospital in Argentina.

    He is experienced in diagnosis and treatment of patient whit a wide spectrum of rhythm disorders including advanced catheter ablation and cardiovascular electronic devices implantation.

    He is also interested in Medical Education and enjoys teaching electrophysiology concepts to medical students, residents and fellows. His research interests lie in complex arrhythmia ablation and cardiovascular electronic devices.

  • Mariana Lamacie MD, MSc

    Physician Bio

    Dr Mariana Lamacié received her medical degree at the University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2006. She then obtained a Masters of Science in Cardiovascular Physiology at the same University in collaboration with University of Graz, Austria (2008). Her project led to a Patent publication on Antioxidant Composition for Tissue and Organ Preservation (2012). After training in Cardiology at Hospital do Coração (Sao Paulo, Brazil) she completed a clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (2011-2014). In 2015 she moved to Canada to do a research fellowship in Cardiac MRI followed by a clinical Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation fellowship at the University of Toronto where she also served as chief fellow. Effective July 2018 she joined the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute as an Assistant Professor. Her clinical research interest lie in heart failure/transplant and cardiac imaging particularly magnetic resonance imaging.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Angeline Law was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec.¬† She obtained her medical degree at McGill University in 2000 and also completed her internal medicine and cardiology residencies at McGill University.¬† She completed a fellowship in echocardiography and additional training in nuclear cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in 2006. ¬†She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa and a clinician-teacher in the Division of Cardiology. ¬†Her practice focuses on noninvasive imaging, specifically echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. ¬†She is the education coordinator for echocardiography training at The Ottawa Hospital ‚Äď General Campus. ¬†Her clinical interests include general cardiology, heart disease in women, the emerging field of cardiology-oncology, stress echocardiography, and patient safety.

  • David Messika-Zeitoun MD PhD

    Dr David Messika-Zeitoun has been recently appointed to the Department of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology, effective January 2018.

    Dr Messika-Zeitoun graduated from medical school at the University Paris VI (Pitié-Salpétriere) in Paris in 1992. He completed his training in Cardiology in Paris and become assistant professor at Tenon hospital in 1999. After a two-years research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic (2001-2003), he returned to Bichat hospital as a staff member of the division of Cardiology. He completed his PhD in 2009 and he was appointed full Professor of Cardiology in 2013.

    Dr Messika-Zeitoun is a non-invasive cardiologist specialized in echocardiography and Valvular Heart Disease. He has a special interest in imaging and new transcatheter therapies.

  • Joel Niznick MD FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Niznick practiced as a community cardiologist at the Riverside Hospital of Ottawa from 1986 until its closure and now has active hospital privileges at the Ottawa Hospital General & Riverside Sites and has Associate of Staff privileges at the Ottawa Heart Institute for cardiac catheterization.

    He is Managing Partner of the Ottawa Cardiovascular Centre which offers cardiovascular care to a registered patient population of over 180,000 patients with approximately 35,000 active patients. Originally founded in 1987 by Drs. Joel Niznick and Brendan Quinn, OCC has grown to a 9 cardiologist group. As well OCC has integrated a Pediatric Cardiologist, 7 Internists and 2 Endocrinologists into the practice to deal with the broader aspects of cardiovascular risk reduction and comprehensive cardiovascular disease management. OCC provides cardiology consultation, cardiovascular risk assessment, long term cardiovascular followup and on site cardiovascular non-invasive testing at two sites. OCC’s catchment area extends from Alexandria to Deep River and the Quebec border to the St Lawrence River. Annually OCC provides upwards of 25,000 patient interactions within the broad spectrum of cardiovascular disease. Additionally OCC provides more than 15,000 diagnostic cardiac tests per year, half of which derive from external referral sources.

    Dr. Niznick’s main areas of clinical interest include cardiovascular risk reduction, cardiac physical examination education and clinical evidence dissemination and implementation. He has designed and developed the Continuing Medical Implementation website www.cvtoolbox.com which has received over 225,000 visitors and provided over a million downloads of cardiovascular risk reduction information in the last year.

    Dr. Niznick has participated in the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Consensus Conference Panels on Heart Failure (Primary Panel), Cardiovascular Disease in the Elderly (Primary Panel) where he authored the chapter on Secondary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in the Elderly, Fitness for Flying and Driving (Secondary Panel) and Refractory Angina Guidelines.

    He is a member of the Executive of the Ontario Association of Cardiologists.
