  • Janine Malcolm MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Malcolm was born and raised in Ottawa.  She completed a BSc in Life Sciences and her medical degree at Queen’s University.  She completed her Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa.  She is an assistant professor and a clinical investigator with the Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Health Research Institute.  She has a clinical and research interest in health services delivery, diabetes in pregnancy, and exercise in diabetes. She has been an investigator for studies on in-hospital glucose control, undiagnosed diabetes among hospitalized patients, gestational diabetes, and exercise in patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

    Dr. Malcolm has a strong commitment to education. She has been active in the undergraduate curriculum for endocrinology and a problem based learning tutor for many years. Under her leadership, the training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism has had many new initiates such as an expanded and comprehensive academic ¬Ĺ day curriculum, structured community rotation, and access for trainees to specialized clinics.

  • Jerry Maniate MD FRCPC

    Dr. Maniate was appointed as Vice President of Education for The Ottawa Hospital effective November 1, 2017.

    Dr. Maniate moved from Toronto where he was a community-¬≠‚Äźbased clinician educator (General Internal Medicine) and the inaugural Chief of Medical Education, Research & Scholarship and Academic Director of the Medical Education Teaching Clinic at St. Joseph‚Äôs Health Centre (Toronto).¬†¬† ¬†He has previously served¬† as the Assistant Director of Researchers at the Wilson Centre, Chair of the Faculty Council Education Committee and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. ¬†Dr. Maniate has had a long-¬≠‚Äźstanding involvement with residency-¬≠‚Äźeducation starting when he served on the Executive Committee and as President of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (now known as Resident Doctors¬†¬† of Canada) and more recently with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in association with its conferences (ICRE and IMELF), various committees and as a member of accreditation survey ¬†teams.

    In reflection of his international educational activities and leadership, Dr. Maniate is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) CanMEDS Academy of Medical Educators. In 2016, he was appointed by Royal College International as Regional Director for Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Associate Regional Director (Faculty Development) for Kuwait.

    As an education researcher, Dr. Maniate is currently working in two main, yet intertwining areas of scholarship: 1) exploring the intended and unintended effects of globalization on medical education systems including (but not limited to) accreditation, assessment, governance, curriculum and health human resources planning; and 2) creating novel models of medical education and research/scholarship.

  • Jean Maroun MD FRCPC FRCP(UK)

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Administrator

    Dr. Maroun graduated from St. Joseph’s University, Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his training in Internal Medicine in England where he obtained the M.R.C.P. (UK) in 1973. He specialized in Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and in the Department of Developmental Therapeutics at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, USA.

    Dr. Maroun is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and was nominated Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, England in 1997. Until June 2002 Dr. Maroun was chair of Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and Head of Medical Oncology at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Maroun was chair of the Ontario Provincial Gastro-Intestinal Practice Guidelines Committee. He is a past President of the Canadian Oncology Societies and the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists. Dr. Maroun has long experience in the management of GI malignancies and has been involved in clinical research into new drugs development and new combinations in the treatment of colorectal cancer. His clinical and basic research focus is on Thymidylate Synthase Inhibitors and other predictors for targeted therapy. Dr. Maroun has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and is involved provincially and nationally in numerous academic and research committees.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Educator

    Dr Anne McCarthy is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and a member of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Ottawa Hospital. She is the Director of the Office of Global Health at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. She is actively involved in Tropical Medicine and International Health including the development of prevention and treatment strategies for malaria and recommendations for travel related vaccine preventable diseases. Dr. McCarthy is the National Coordinator of the Canadian Malaria Network in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Travel Medicine Program and chair of the Malaria Subcommittee¬†of the Committee to Advise on Tropical Medicine and Travel.

    Her clinical interests include directing the Tropical Medicine and International Health Clinic at the General Campus, clinical infectious diseases with emphasis on infections in the intensive care unit and bone marrow transplant patients, as well as malaria and tuberculosis.

    She has a large educational commitment, including undergraduate, postgraduate medical and continuing education teaching in infectious disease, travel medicine, tropical medicine and global health.

    Her research interests include clinical and medical education activities. Clinical research includes infections in compromised hosts, implementation of vaccine delivery programs within a healthcare setting, studies on antimalarial drugs – including tolerability and interactions with concurrent medication (such as antiretroviral drugs for HIV), vaccine efficacy, and compliance with travel medicine recommendations. Her Medical education research focuses on development and evaluation of global health curriculum, as well as the development of learning resources for those undertaking international global health experiences, including the development of the ACTION Global Health website (www.actionglobalhealth.com).

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Scientist

    Dr. Brendan McCormick is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at The Ottawa Hospital and theUniversityofOttawa. His major clinical interests include resistant hypertension, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.  He is medical director of the satellite dialysis units at St. Vincent’s Hospital,WinchesterHospitaland theQueenswayCarletonHospital.

    Dr. McCormick received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Queen‚Äôs University and completed his MD at theUniversity ofToronto where he also completed Core Internal Medicine training followed by a fellowship in Nephrology.¬† Dr. McCormick ‚Äės major focus during fellowship training was on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.¬†¬†¬† He is also certified specialist in Clinical Hypertension with the American Society of Hypertension.¬† He joined theOttawaHospital in 2003 and theUniversity ofOttawa in 2004.

     Dr. McCormick’s current academic interests include clinical research in hypertension and peritoneal dialysis.    He is active in teaching at the undergraduate and post graduate level at theUniversityofOttawa, and also gives invited lectures and seminars on peritoneal dialysis nationally and internationally.
