    Physician Bio

    Associate Professor of Medicine and former Head, Division of Nephrology at The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa. Director of Hemodialysis, Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Magner received his MD from the University of Ottawa and trained in Internal Medicine in Ottawa and Christ Church, New Zealand. He did his Nephrology Fellowship in Toronto including a Research Fellowship in Electrolyte Physiology. His first academic appointment was at the University of Calgary where he was Undergraduate Renal Block Chair and received several teaching awards.

    Since coming to Ottawa he has been heavily involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education as well as CME. He also has a major involvement in Nephrology administration and the restructuring of Nephrology services within the amalgamated Ottawa Hospital, the region and the province.

    Clinical InterestsHypertension ‚ÄĘ Hemodialysis ‚ÄĘ Acute renal replacement¬†therapy in ICU ‚ÄĘ Progressive renal insufficiency

    Research InterestsCollaboration in clinical trials, particularly in hemodialysis.

    Educational InterestsUndergraduate and postgraduate education, especially electrolyte physiology, hypertension and the management of acute & chronic renal failure.  CME, especially about progressive renal insufficiency and hypertension.

  • Janine Malcolm MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Malcolm was born and raised in Ottawa.  She completed a BSc in Life Sciences and her medical degree at Queen’s University.  She completed her Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa.  She is an assistant professor and a clinical investigator with the Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Health Research Institute.  She has a clinical and research interest in health services delivery, diabetes in pregnancy, and exercise in diabetes. She has been an investigator for studies on in-hospital glucose control, undiagnosed diabetes among hospitalized patients, gestational diabetes, and exercise in patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

    Dr. Malcolm has a strong commitment to education. She has been active in the undergraduate curriculum for endocrinology and a problem based learning tutor for many years. Under her leadership, the training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism has had many new initiates such as an expanded and comprehensive academic ¬Ĺ day curriculum, structured community rotation, and access for trainees to specialized clinics.

  • Jerry Maniate MD FRCPC

    Dr. Maniate was appointed as Vice President of Education for The Ottawa Hospital effective November 1, 2017.

    Dr. Maniate moved from Toronto where he was a community-¬≠‚Äźbased clinician educator (General Internal Medicine) and the inaugural Chief of Medical Education, Research & Scholarship and Academic Director of the Medical Education Teaching Clinic at St. Joseph‚Äôs Health Centre (Toronto).¬†¬† ¬†He has previously served¬† as the Assistant Director of Researchers at the Wilson Centre, Chair of the Faculty Council Education Committee and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. ¬†Dr. Maniate has had a long-¬≠‚Äźstanding involvement with residency-¬≠‚Äźeducation starting when he served on the Executive Committee and as President of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (now known as Resident Doctors¬†¬† of Canada) and more recently with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in association with its conferences (ICRE and IMELF), various committees and as a member of accreditation survey ¬†teams.

    In reflection of his international educational activities and leadership, Dr. Maniate is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) CanMEDS Academy of Medical Educators. In 2016, he was appointed by Royal College International as Regional Director for Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Associate Regional Director (Faculty Development) for Kuwait.

    As an education researcher, Dr. Maniate is currently working in two main, yet intertwining areas of scholarship: 1) exploring the intended and unintended effects of globalization on medical education systems including (but not limited to) accreditation, assessment, governance, curriculum and health human resources planning; and 2) creating novel models of medical education and research/scholarship.
