    Career Orientation: Clinician-Teacher

    Dr. Lisa Fischer received her Bachelor of Sciences from McGill University in Microbiology and Immunology and in International Development. After working for a short while as a teacher in Northern Quebec, she returned home to Ottawa to complete her doctorate in medicine at the University of Ottawa. In 2014, she graduated from the Royal College Emergency Medicine program from the University of Ottawa while simultaneously completing a one year fellowship program in Palliative Care. She divides her time between working as an attending in the Emergency Department and with Palliative Care. Her research interests lie in advance care planning, pre-hospital palliative care, and the use of point-of-care ultrasound in palliative care.

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Administrator

    Dr. Edward Fitzgibbon is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa and a Clinician-Investigator with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

    In 1982, Dr. Fitzgibbon graduated from medical school in University College Cork, Ireland. He subsequently completed a 12-month internship and 3-year residency in General Practice based at Cork University Hospital. In 1986, Dr. Fitzgibbon moved to Newfoundland and practiced there in Family and Emergency Medicine until successfully applying for the Fellowship program in Palliative Medicine in Ottawa in 1999.

    Dr. Fitzgibbon joined the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa in 2001, and in 2004 completed his Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology. In 2004, he was appointed to his current position as Medical Director of the Palliative Care Program at The Ottawa Hospital. He also serves as a clinician at The Ottawa Hospital Complex Cancer Pain clinic.

    Dr. Fitzgibbon’s primary research interests are in the management of cancer pain syndromes and in developing and assessing clinical quality improvement initiatives to improve the delivery of palliative care. At present, my career path is divided between being a Clinician-Administrator and Clinician-Investigator.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Valérie Gratton is an Assistant Professor and a Clinician-Teacher with the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa. As of April 2011, Dr. Gratton began implementing a new Palliative Care Consultation Team at the Montfort Hospital – an acute care community and teaching hospital in Ottawa. Dr. Gratton, a family physician by training, has also been working as a hospitalist on the medical wards of Montfort Hospital since 2007.

    Dr. Gratton completed her medical degree at the University of Ottawa in 2005, and then underwent a two-year Family Medicine residency program with the University of Ottawa’s Montfort Hospital stream. In January 2011, she completed her fellowship in Palliative Medicine through the Palliative Medicine Residency Program with the University of Ottawa.

    Specific interests include the importance and roles of palliative care in acute care hospitals, and prognostication in non-malignant diseases. Her affiliation to Montfort Hospital, the only francophone teaching hospital west of Quebec, demonstrates her desire to offer quality medical care to this patient population, as well as to teach in both official languages.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Michael Hartwick is an Assistant Professor and a clinical scholar in the Division of Palliative Care and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Hartwick works as a Palliative Care physician on the Palliative Care Unit at Bruyère Continuing Care and as a Palliative Care physician for The Ottawa Hospital’s Palliative Care Consultation Service. He also practices as an Intensivist in the Intensive Care Unit at The Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Hartwick graduated from medical school at the University of Calgary in 2004. He completed his core Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Ottawa serving as Chief Medical Resident in 2007. Dr. Hartwick completed a joint two-year fellowship program in Palliative Care Medicine and Critical Care Medicine in July 2009.

    Dr. Hartwick is currently completing his Master’s studies in Medical Education. He is affiliated with AIME (Academy for Innovation in Medical Education) through the Health Care Education Scholars Program and an AIME Research Fellowship beginning July 2012. Dr. Hartwick’s academic and education interests are communication skills for acute care physicians and palliative/end-of -life care in the ICU. He is a career tracked Clinician-Teacher.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng (pronounced Kwajo) is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Kyeremanteng practices as a Palliative Care physician for The Ottawa Hospital’s Palliative Care Consultation.

    Dr. Kyeremanteng was born and raised in Edmonton where he did his medical school (University of Alberta, completed in 2005). He and his wife then moved to Ottawa where he did his Internal Medicine residency training (University of Ottawa, completed in 2008). Dr. Kyeremanteng continued his studies by pursuing a joint two-year fellowship program in Palliative Care Medicine and Critical Care Medicine (University of Ottawa, completed in June 2010).

    Along with working in Palliative Care, Dr. Kyeremanteng also does locums for Internal Medicine and Critical Care at The Ottawa Hospital. He is also doing some echocardiography training through the Department of Cardiology at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Kyeremanteng’s academic interests are in end of life in the palliative care and critical care settings, and integration of Palliative Care in the Intensive Care Unit. His career track is as Clinician-Teacher.

  • Peter Lawlor MD FRCPI CCFP MMedSc

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Peter Lawlor is an Associate Professor in the Division of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa and Medical Director of the 36-bed Palliative Care Unit at Bruyère Continuing Care, Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital.

    Dr. Lawlor obtained his basic medical degree in 1983 and an MMed Sc degree in Pathology in 1985 from the University College Dublin. He underwent four years of general professional training in Dublin teaching hospitals, and a year of general practice training in the UK. He then immigrated to Canada to work as a family physician. He commenced a Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Alberta in 1996. He has subsequently worked in all parts of the Edmonton Palliative Care Program over a period of eight years. Prior to returning to Dublin, he was Director of the University Hospital Palliative Care Program in Edmonton.

    Dr. Lawlor returned to Dublin in April 2004 as a consultant in Palliative Medicine at Our Lady’s Hospice and St. James’ Hospital. He holds an adjunct appointment with the University of Alberta as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Palliative Care Medicine. He moved to Ottawa in January 2010 and commenced duties as a Palliative Care physician on the inpatient Palliative Care Unit at the Bruyère Continuing Care – Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital. His research interests include pain assessment and opioid side-effects.
