    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Asmis is a Medical Oncologist who specializes in Gastrointestinal cancers and sarcoma at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre.  He completed his medical training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology at theUniversityofOttawa.  He also completed a fellowship in gastrointestinal oncology at theMemorialSloanKetteringCancerCenter.  Dr. Asmis has a strong interest in research, and he has published his work in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented at national and international meetings.  He also has a strong interest in teaching medical students, residents and other members of the oncology team.  He was awarded the 2009 “Golden Throat Award” as the best teacher in Medical Oncology at theUniversityofOttawa, where he is an Assistant Professor of Medicine.

  • Andrew Aw FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Andrew Aw has been recently appointed to the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hematology.  He obtained his BASc (Electrical Engineering) at Queen’s University followed by his MEng (Biomedical Engineering) and medical degree at McGill University.  He completed core internal medicine and hematology fellowship training at the University of Ottawa, serving as chief medical resident from 2011-2012 and chief hematology resident from 2013-2014.  Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in lymphoproliferative disorders and an MSc in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa in addition to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Clinical Investigator Program.  He also obtained further clinical training at the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA.  Andrew practices malignant hematology at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, with a focus on patients with lymphoma and CLL.

  • Sibel Zehra Aydin MD

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Sibel Z. Aydin completed her undergraduate medical education at the Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine in 2000. She received her degree in internal medicine and worked as chief resident at the same department in 2005. During her training in Rheumatology at the same university between 2005 and 2009, Dr. Aydin developed an interest in imaging in inflammatory arthritis. She received a fellowship from the University of Leeds between 2009 and 2011 in this area. In 2012 she became an Associate Professor and joined our Department of Medicine in 2015. Dr. Aydin practices Rheumatology in Riverside Campus of the Ottawa Hospital and is also a Clinician Investigator in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the OHRI. Her main research interest is imaging in inflammatory arthritis where she focuses on identification of true inflammation, accurate assessment of radiographic involvement in inflammatory arthritis and predictive factors to develop inflammatory arthritis in psoriasis.

  • Nahid Azad MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Azad is an innovative academic physician focused on advancing women’s health services, leading integrated curriculum development, fostering women’s career advancement, and promoting gender equity. Dr. Azad achieved the academic rank of full professor in 2011 for her scholarship as a clinician teacher and researcher. As a geriatrician in full clinical practice, she has held many leadership positions. Her clinical research focuses mainly on heart failure and cardiovascular disease and gender differences in health – particularly in older women. Dr. Azad interest is in both the area of patient care quality and safety and the area of cardio-geriatrics program for the frail elderly.

    Activitieshighlights:

    • President of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada – a national organization in support of women’s leadership and health issues
    • Director, U.O. Faculty of Medicine and the National/Provincial Chair of Equity, Diversity and Gender issues – reporting to the deans of six Ontario medical schools and the board of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada
    • Head of the Division of Geriatric Services at the Ottawa General Hospital. Post-amalgamation, she became Director of the Geriatric Assessment Inpatient Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, where she was responsible for overall service quality
    • Has led peer reviewed RCT, multidisciplinary management of older women with congestive heart failure in the community (Women’s Health Council of Ontario)
    • Co-investigator of the POWER Study on Ontario Women’s Health and has been a national advisor to the Ministry of Health Strategic Planning for Older Women’s Health Priorities
