    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Michael Hartwick is an Assistant Professor and a clinical scholar in the Division of Palliative Care and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Hartwick works as a Palliative Care physician on the Palliative Care Unit at Bruyère Continuing Care and as a Palliative Care physician for The Ottawa Hospital’s Palliative Care Consultation Service. He also practices as an Intensivist in the Intensive Care Unit at The Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Hartwick graduated from medical school at the University of Calgary in 2004. He completed his core Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Ottawa serving as Chief Medical Resident in 2007. Dr. Hartwick completed a joint two-year fellowship program in Palliative Care Medicine and Critical Care Medicine in July 2009.

    Dr. Hartwick is currently completing his Master’s studies in Medical Education. He is affiliated with AIME (Academy for Innovation in Medical Education) through the Health Care Education Scholars Program and an AIME Research Fellowship beginning July 2012. Dr. Hartwick’s academic and education interests are communication skills for acute care physicians and palliative/end-of -life care in the ICU. He is a career tracked Clinician-Teacher.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Hasimja is a recent addition to staff (2010). She is a medial graduate of the University of Prishtina, Kosovo. She completed her Residency in Internal Medicine at Tufts University, Boston and a Fellowship in Internal Medicine in Ottawa. She joined the staff thereafter in 2010. She is currently an Assistant Professor on a Clinician-teacher career track with the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine.

  • Ben Hibbert MD PhD FRCPC

    Career Orientation: Clinician Scientist

    Dr. Hibbert received his Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology with specialization in Biotechnology in 2002 from the University of Ottawa – receiving the University Gold Medal and Thomas F Lapierre Award for highest standing in a bachelor program. Subsequently, he went on to pursue his MD graduating in 2006 followed by training in Internal Medicine serving as Chief Resident in 2009. He then completed residency training in Adult Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute where he has served as Chief Resident in his final year. During this period Dr Hibbert participated in the Clinician Investigator Program while doing his PhD in Biochemistry under the supervision of Dr. Edward O’Brien. Finally, Dr. Hibbert completed a two year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology.

    Dr Hibbert practices Interventional Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute with a special interest in structural heart interventions including PFO/ASD, LAA closure and Mitraclip. His research focuses include basic science research into the arterial response to injury and clinical outcomes based research

  • Phyllis Hierlihy MD FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Hierlihy is an Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Ottawa. She practices as a consultant in endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Ottawa Health Services, the Riverside Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, and the Queensway Carleton Hospital. In addition, she conducts a busy endocrine consulting practice via the Ontario Telehealth Network with five hospitals in Renfrew County. Recently, she was appointed to serve as an endocrine specialist lead with the new Diabetes Regional Coordinating Committee for the Champlain LHIN. She participates in clinical research trials in diabetes and enjoys clinical teaching with family physicians. In keeping with her interest and commitment to physical fitness, she is medical director of the Strong Women Program developed and offered jointly with the Shirley Greenberg Women’s Health Centre and the Ottawa YW-YMCA.

  • Tina Hsu MD FRCPC ABIM

    Career Orientation: Clinical-Investigator

    Dr. Tina Hsu graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science. She completed medical school and her internal medicine training at McMaster University prior to completing her medical oncology training at the University of Toronto. She worked in Vancouver at the British Columbia Cancer Agency prior to returning to complete a research fellowship, funded by the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists (CAMO)/Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), in geriatric oncology under the mentorship of Dr. Arti Hurria at City of Hope where she studied caregiver burden in caregivers of older adults with cancer.

    Dr. Hsu’s main areas of interest are geriatric oncology and medical education. She is specifically interested in better understanding decision making in adults age 80 and over with cancer. She is a member of the Education Committee within the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) and is involved in initiatives to develop curriculum in geriatric oncology to educate oncologists, geriatricians, and Allied Health workers. She is also involved with the Royal College medical oncology competency by design initiative.
