    Melissa Forgie MD FRCPC MSc

    Dr. Melissa Forgie is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s medical school and has fellowships in each of the specialty areas of Internal Medicine, Hematology and Thromboembolic Disorders. She has a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology. She is a clinician investigator with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and was the Program Director for the University of Ottawa’s Hematology Training Program for five years. She was appointed Vice-Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education at the Faculty of Medicine in May 2011, and was the Assistant Dean, Student Affairs from 2009-2011.

    Dr. Forgie has received several teaching awards, including two Faculty awards of excellence in 2010 for exceptional compassion for patients and for promotion of the well-being of her colleagues and students. Fully bilingual, she teaches in both the Anglophone and Francophone streams of the undergraduate medical education program. She has also received numerous patient care awards. She is a 2009 recipient of the Ottawa Hospital Physician Clinician Recognition Award. Her clinical practice specializes in thromboembolic diseases, hemoglobinopathies and transfusional iron overload.

  • Alan Forster MD FRCPC MSc

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Alan J. Forster is a general internist and the Vice Chair of Quality & Clinical Services within the Department of Medicine. He is also the Chief Quality and Performance Officer at The Ottawa Hospital. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

    His research focuses on patient safety and quality improvement. He has performed seminal work evaluating the incidence of adverse events following discharge from hospital. This work has lead to the development of strategies to improve care during the transition home from hospital. He is also leading in the development of a hospital data warehouse, which will serve as a supporting infrastructure for a research program in patient safety and quality of care. He has over 135 publications in peer review journals.

    He has received several prestigious awards recognizing his work within the field of health services research, including a Career Scientist Award with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and an Early Research Award and Ontario Research Fund grant from the Ontario Government’s Ministry of Research and Innovation.

    In addition to his significant contributions to a quality and safety program at the Ottawa Hospital, he provides ongoing scientific advice regarding the measurement of quality of care to national and international organizations, such as the Canadian Institute for Health Information and the World Health Organization.

  • Mark Freedman MD FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Scientist

    Dr. Freedman is currently professor of medicine in the field of neurology at the University of Ottawa, as well as director of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus. A graduate of the University of Toronto, Dr. Freedman holds his Masters Degree in Molecular Neurochemistry and continued his postgraduate work specializing in neurology and neuroimmunology after medical school. His specialized training took him to the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel; The National Hospital, Queen Square, London UK, as well as the Montreal Neurological Institute. He holds his specialist certification in Quebec CSPQ and all of Canada FRCP(C) and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN).

    Dr. Freedman has published over 200 pieces, including articles, books, book chapters and abstracts and has been invited to give hundreds of lectures and presentations nationally and internationally. His extensive research includes the area of molecular neurochemistry, cellular immunology and clinical studies in MS. He is currently holding peer reviewed and industry related funding for translational research investigating immune mechanisms of damage in multiple sclerosis, with particular interest in the role of gamma-delta T-cells. He is also the lead investigator in the Canadian Bone Marrow Transplant Study in MS.

    Dr. Freedman has over 25 years of experience in the management of patients with multiple sclerosis and has been the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials with new therapeutic agents for MS. He has experience from serving on several research study steering committees as well as data safety monitoring boards. He is also active on several national and international committees including the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, National MS Society (USA), the Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in MS (ACTRIMS) and the Consortium of MS Centres (CMSC), where he currently holds the position of CMSC secretary. He is also the immediate past president of the Canadian Network of MS Clinics.

    Dr. Jill Fulcher has recently been appointed to the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hematology, effective November 2016.

    Dr. Fulcher completed her undergraduate medical education in 2006 at University College Dublin, Ireland. In 2009, she became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland having completed her General Internal Medicine training at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. From 2010 to 2015 she undertook Higher Specialist Training in Clinical Hematology with the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and in 2015 became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology (FRCPath UK). She completed a Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant Fellowship at BC Cancer Agency/Vancouver General Hospital prior to moving to Ottawa to take up the position of FTA – Assistant Professor, Clinical Investigator in the Department of Medicine and Attending Hematologist at the Ottawa hospital, General Campus.

    Dr. Fulcher has a PhD in Medicine and Therapeutics from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. She has experience in translational research at post-doctoral level with first-author publications in International peer-reviewed journals (AJ Mackarel et al). Her clinical and research interests in the Division of Hematology will focus on acute leukemia, in particular on the care of adolescent/young adults including long-term follow-up/survivorship issues.
