  • Sophie De Roock

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Sophie De Roock has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology, effective February 2018.

    Dr. Sophie De Roock completed her M.D. (1998) and a first residency in Emergency Medicine (2000) followed by a residency in Anesthesiology (2009) and Intensive Care (2010) at the Catholic University of Brussels. She began her career in health care as an Intensivist and Anesthesiologist in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc (Brussels) in 2009.

    She acquired special expertise in mechanical circulatory support (ECLS and VAD).

    Dr. De Roock joined the University of Ottawa Heart Institute as the Medical Officer, Quality and Outcomes in October 2015. She developed a new mortality review process and is an active member of the Critical Care Heart Team. She has enabled protocol development.

    She will provide critical care expertise for the care of complex patients in the CCU. She is working with the team to develop the temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) program. Her research will focus on this field and Cardiovascular critical care. She will also be active in teaching at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

  • Aurelien Delluc MD PhD

    Dr. Aurélien Delluc, M.D, Ph.D., is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, a clinician-scientist in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology. He was born and trained in France.

    He appointed as Full Professor of internal medicine at the Western Brittany University, France, physician in the Department of Internal Medicine and Chest Diseases at Brest University Hospital and a Senior Scientist in the ‚ÄúGroupe d‚Äô√©tude de la thrombose de Bretagne occidentale‚ÄĚ Western Brittany Study Group on Thrombosis, EA3878, Minist√®re de l‚ÄôEnseignement Sup√©rieur et de la Recherche, France.

    His primary research interest is the evaluation of venous thromboembolism risk (VTE) including the epidemiology of VTE, links between atherothrombosis and VTE, cancer-associated thrombosis, and VTE risk associated with hospitalization. He has 75 peer-reviewed publications in specialized journals and multiple communications in national and international meetings. He is a member of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and a regular reviewer for thrombosis journals.

  • Bob Dent MDCM FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Robert Dent is a specialist in Internal Medicine with academic appointments in Endocrinology and Surgery at the University of Ottawa.

    In 1992 he established the Weight Management Clinic at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.  This is a multidisciplinary clinic designed with these objectives:  patient care, teaching health care professionals and research in the genotype phenotype associations of obesity.    This clinic design has been adopted in several Canadian university centres.

    With respect to research he has 35 publications in peer reviewed journals in the last 7 years.  These publications deal with the design and out comes of the clinic; and on the genetics of obesity.  Since 2011 he and Dr Ruth McPherson hold a CIHR Genetics grant entitled Metabloic and Genetic determinants of Obesity and Obesity-related Phenotypes

    During the years 2005 to 2007, He was a member of the Expert Committee for the Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Management and Prevention of Obesity and contributed two chapters to that work which were published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2007.

    Other memberships include: The Canadian Obesity Network (founding Membership), Bariatric Surgery Panel to develop the Health Technology Utilization Guidelines of Ontario, November 2005, Chairman for the working group on obesity for the Champlain Primary Care CVD Prevention Guidelines both in September 2006, and for the 2012 edition and Board member of The Ontario Bariatric Network, and Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.

    Since 2009, he has worked with the Ministry of Health of Ontario as Chairman, The Ontario Bariatric Network Patient Assessment Working Group.  The objectives of this committee were to develop criteria to identify appropriate candidates for bariatric surgery including those outside the usual BMI and age ranges; to develop a structured assessment process to allow fair and equitable access to obese patients requiring bariatric surgery.

    His primary interests include, Obesity treatment, psychosocial aspects of obesity, patient advocacy, and the genotype-phenotype associations of obesity.

  • Susan Dent BSc MD FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Dent obtained her MD at McMaster University. She completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa and obtained her membership in the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in 1993. She continued her training in Medical Oncology in Ottawa, followed by a fellowship year in Clinical Research with the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group.

    Dr. Dent has held staff positions as a medical oncologist at the Northwestern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre in Thunder Bay and currently is a staff medical oncologist at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. She served as Head of the Clinical Trials Research Office at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre from 2000 to 2007 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 2007. She was recently named Vice-Chair, Patient Quality & Safety and serves as a a member of the Cancer Care Ontario Breast Disease Site Group Practice Guidelines Committee, Ontario Cancer Research Ethics Board, IND working group for the Breast Cancer Disease Site Committee of the National Cancer Institute for Canada Clinical Trials Group and Grant Review Panel for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Institute of Health Research. Her areas of interest include breast cancer (in particular, side effects of breast cancer treatments), new drug development and research ethics.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Desjardins is a Clinical Scholar with the Department of Medicine and a Lecturer at the University of Ottawa. She received her MD from the University of Ottawa in 2007 and completed her training in Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 2011.

    Dr. Desjardins is in the process of completing a Masters in Medical Education with the University of Dundee, Scotland. Since joining the Faculty Dr. Desjardins has committed herself to studying medical education and in 2012 she accepted the role of Co-Director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship Program. She makes time to attend conferences locally, nationally and internationally and looks forward to taking on ever greater leadership and administrative roles within the University of Ottawa and the Department of Medicine.
