    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Khadija Bhimji is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa.

    Dr. Bhimji is a Palliative Care physician with the Palliative Care Consultation Service at both The Ottawa Hospital and Queensway Carleton Hospital. She also provides consultation services for outpatients at The Ottawa Hospital’s Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre located at the Queensway Carleton Hospital site.

    Dr. Bhimji completed her medical school at the University of British Columbia in 1990. She continued her studies in the Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residency programs from 1990-1993 at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Bhimji worked as an independent family practitioner and as a General Practitioner in Medical Oncology in the Ottawa area from 1993-2002. She then opted to pursue fellowship training from 2003-2004 in the Palliative Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa.

    In February 2004, Dr. Bhimji joined the Division of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa. She currently focuses her work on her clinical responsibilities and is involved in teaching learners through our Palliative Medicine Residency Program with the University of Ottawa. Her main interest focuses on palliative care for non-malignant diseases.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Investigator

    Dr. Shirley H. Bush is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa, a Clinical Scientist at the √Člisabeth Bruy√®re Research Institute and a Palliative Care physician at Bruy√®re Continuing Care, Ottawa.

    Her primary research interests include delirium, quality-of-life assessments in advanced cancer patients and medical undergraduate education. She is the principal investigator of an AIME grant, ‚ÄėEvaluating the New Medical Undergraduate Palliative Care Curriculum at the University of Ottawa‚Äô.

    Dr. Bush obtained her medical degree from St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, University of London and vocationally trained as a General Practitioner in London, UK. She then gained experience working in different palliative care, oncology and paediatric units in New Zealand, and completed specialist training in Palliative Medicine with a further year of palliative medicine in Sydney, Australia. She subsequently worked as a Senior Staff Specialist in Palliative Care for Southern Health Care Network, Melbourne, Australia for 8 years with her role including consultative/ liaison work in addition to working in McCulloch House, a busy tertiary level inpatient unit. During this period, she was also the Palliative Care Physician for South East Palliative Care, a specialist community palliative care organization.

    Dr. Bush completed a year as Visiting Scientist in the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA, with Dr. Eduardo Bruera before taking up her current position in Ottawa in April 2009.

    As a pastime, she is a passionate Argentine Tango and Flamenco dancer.

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Raphael Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa with a Clinician-Teacher academic career track.

    Dr. Chan is also a Palliative Care physician for the Palliative Care Unit and the Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultation Service at Bruyère Continuing Care; as well as, The Ottawa Hospital Palliative Care Consultation Service.

    Dr. Chan attended medical school at the University of British Columbia from 1994-1998. From 1998-2000, he continued his studies in the Rural Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of British Columbia with rotations in Vernon, Kelowna and Creston (British Columbia) and Inuvik (Northwest Territories). From 2000-2003, he worked in family practice in the remote city of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Following three years of full service family practice, he decided to pursue fellowship training in the Palliative Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa.

    In November 2004, Dr. Chan joined the Division of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa. His current work now concentrates on clinical responsibilities and teaching medical students, residents and clinical fellows in the University of Ottawa’s teaching hospitals.

  • Michel Dionne MD FRCPC

    Career Orientation: Clinician-Teacher

    Dr. Michel Dionne has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of Palliative Care, effective July 2015.

    Dr. Dionne obtained his B. Sc. (Hon) in chemistry and his M.D. at the University of Ottawa prior to completing training in anatomical pathology at Dalhousie University in Halifax (2005). After practicing pathology in Halifax and Peterborough, he returned to Ottawa and joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa. In 2012-2013, he completed a year of training in palliative medicine at the University of Ottawa, after which he began practicing palliative care in the community. Dr. Dionne joined the Supportive and Palliative Care Consultation Service at The Ottawa Hospital as a locum physician in 2014, where he continues to practice palliative care. His main academic interest is undergraduate medical teaching.

    James Downar graduated from McGill Medical School and completed residency training in Internal Medicine, Critical Care and Palliative Care at the University of Toronto. He received a Master’s degree in Bioethics from the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto in 2010.
