  • Nahid Azad MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Azad is an innovative academic physician focused on advancing women’s health services, leading integrated curriculum development, fostering women’s career advancement, and promoting gender equity. Dr. Azad achieved the academic rank of full professor in 2011 for her scholarship as a clinician teacher and researcher. As a geriatrician in full clinical practice, she has held many leadership positions. Her clinical research focuses mainly on heart failure and cardiovascular disease and gender differences in health – particularly in older women. Dr. Azad interest is in both the area of patient care quality and safety and the area of cardio-geriatrics program for the frail elderly.

    Activitieshighlights:

    • President of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada – a national organization in support of women’s leadership and health issues
    • Director, U.O. Faculty of Medicine and the National/Provincial Chair of Equity, Diversity and Gender issues – reporting to the deans of six Ontario medical schools and the board of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada
    • Head of the Division of Geriatric Services at the Ottawa General Hospital. Post-amalgamation, she became Director of the Geriatric Assessment Inpatient Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, where she was responsible for overall service quality
    • Has led peer reviewed RCT, multidisciplinary management of older women with congestive heart failure in the community (Women’s Health Council of Ontario)
    • Co-investigator of the POWER Study on Ontario Women’s Health and has been a national advisor to the Ministry of Health Strategic Planning for Older Women’s Health Priorities
    • The CLIMBE: A HANDBOOK FOR WOMEN ACADEMIC PHYSICIANS. Co-authoring Academic Advancement for Medical Women
    • Advanced Tele-Health services to dementia patients
    • Has led the integration of gender and health teaching at the undergrad. curriculum at UO: a provincial collaborative curriculum [genderandhealth.ca]

  • Anna Byszewski MD FRCPC

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Educator

    Dr. Byszewski is Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Division of Geriatric Medicine. obtained her medical degree from the University of Ottawa, where she also continued her training in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. She obtained a Master’s of Education in Health Professions from OISE (UT).

    Dr. Byszewski’s areas of interest include medical education including translation of knowledge and evaluation. Dr. Byszewski is involved with developing and teaching communication skills and professionalism in the medical curriculum, in her role as Director of Professionalism, Undergraduate Curriculum, University of Ottawa. She is also acore competency expert for the ePortfolio program and leads Faculty Development for this program .

    Dr. Byszewski has been involved in leadinginitiaives in geriatric medicine inosteoporosis, and driving/caregiving issues in dementia. She has led the development and implementation of the Cognitive Change care map in the Geriatric Day Hospital . She chaired a task group for the Dementia Network of Ottawa that produced the Driving and Dementia Toolkit, a resource manual for health care workers dealing with this issue. The toolkit has been formally evaluated and is now available in generic form for adaptation in different regions, with a recently updated 3rd edition. A companion Patient and Caregiver Driving Toolkit has also been developed. They are both available at www.rgpeo.com.

  • William Dalziel MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Bill Dalziel is an internist with a sub-specialty in geriatrics. He studied Medical School (1971-75) at University of Toronto, Internal Medicine (1975-1980) at the University of Alberta, and Geriatric Specialty Training at the University of California at Los Angeles (1980-1982). He was Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine from 1985 to 1999. He was the Chief of the Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario (RGPEO) from 1985 to 2010. He is currently Chief of Geriatric Outreach Services (RGPEO). In addition he is past President of the Canadian Geriatrics Society and past editor of the Journal of the Canadian Geriatrics Society.

    His clinical interests include polypharmacy, issues related to driving and dementia, and the pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

    He is active in research with a particular focus on dementia care.

    His educational interests include dementia, education and medication prescribing in the elderly.   He is a Professor in Geriatric Medicine.

    He was awarded the Ronald Cape Distinguished Services Award  for Lifetime Achievement by the Canadian Geriatrics Society  in 2010.

  • Shirley Huang MD FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Huang is a Geriatric Medicine specialist and Lecturer in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.  She is a Clinician-Investigator with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She received her B.Sc. in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia (U.B.C) in 2000 and then M. Sc. at McGill University in 2003.  She went on to earn her Doctor of Medicine at U.B.C. in 2007.  She completed her Internal Medicine residency followed by Geriatric Medicine fellowship training at U.B.C by 2013. Dr. Huang’s clinical interests include falls, dementia, polypharmacy and advanced care planning. Her research interests include healthcare quality improvement and patient safety in the care of the geriatric patient, medication safety at care transitions and falls prevention.
