    Associate Professor of Medicine and former Head, Division of Nephrology at The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa. Director of Hemodialysis, Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Magner received his MD from the University of Ottawa and trained in Internal Medicine in Ottawa and Christ Church, New Zealand. He did his Nephrology Fellowship in Toronto including a Research Fellowship in Electrolyte Physiology. His first academic appointment was at the University of Calgary where he was Undergraduate Renal Block Chair and received several teaching awards.

    Since coming to Ottawa he has been heavily involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education as well as CME. He also has a major involvement in Nephrology administration and the restructuring of Nephrology services within the amalgamated Ottawa Hospital, the region and the province.

    Dr. Malcolm was born and raised in Ottawa.  She completed a BSc in Life Sciences and her medical degree at Queen’s University.  She completed her Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa.  She is an assistant professor and a clinical investigator with the Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Health Research Institute.  She has a clinical and research interest in health services delivery, diabetes in pregnancy, and exercise in diabetes. She has been an investigator for studies on in-hospital glucose control, undiagnosed diabetes among hospitalized patients, gestational diabetes, and exercise in patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

    Dr. Malcolm has a strong commitment to education. She has been active in the undergraduate curriculum for endocrinology and a problem based learning tutor for many years. Under her leadership, the training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism has had many new initiates such as an expanded and comprehensive academic ¬Ĺ day curriculum, structured community rotation, and access for trainees to specialized clinics.

    Dr. Maniate was appointed as Vice President of Education for The Ottawa Hospital effective November 1, 2017.

    Dr. Maniate moved from Toronto where he was a community-¬≠‚Äźbased clinician educator (General Internal Medicine) and the inaugural Chief of Medical Education, Research & Scholarship and Academic Director of the Medical Education Teaching Clinic at St. Joseph‚Äôs Health Centre (Toronto).¬†¬† ¬†He has previously served¬† as the Assistant Director of Researchers at the Wilson Centre, Chair of the Faculty Council Education Committee and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. ¬†Dr. Maniate has had a long-¬≠‚Äźstanding involvement with residency-¬≠‚Äźeducation starting when he served on the Executive Committee and as President of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (now known as Resident Doctors¬†¬† of Canada) and more recently with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in association with its conferences (ICRE and IMELF), various committees and as a member of accreditation survey ¬†teams.

    In reflection of his international educational activities and leadership, Dr. Maniate is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) CanMEDS Academy of Medical Educators. In 2016, he was appointed by Royal College International as Regional Director for Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Associate Regional Director (Faculty Development) for Kuwait.

    As an education researcher, Dr. Maniate is currently working in two main, yet intertwining areas of scholarship: 1) exploring the intended and unintended effects of globalization on medical education systems including (but not limited to) accreditation, assessment, governance, curriculum and health human resources planning; and 2) creating novel models of medical education and research/scholarship.

  • Jean Maroun MD FRCPC FRCP(UK)

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Administrator

    Dr. Maroun graduated from St. Joseph’s University, Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his training in Internal Medicine in England where he obtained the M.R.C.P. (UK) in 1973. He specialized in Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and in the Department of Developmental Therapeutics at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, USA.

    Dr. Maroun is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and was nominated Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, England in 1997. Until June 2002 Dr. Maroun was chair of Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and Head of Medical Oncology at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and Ottawa Hospital.

    Dr. Maroun was chair of the Ontario Provincial Gastro-Intestinal Practice Guidelines Committee. He is a past President of the Canadian Oncology Societies and the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists. Dr. Maroun has long experience in the management of GI malignancies and has been involved in clinical research into new drugs development and new combinations in the treatment of colorectal cancer. His clinical and basic research focus is on Thymidylate Synthase Inhibitors and other predictors for targeted therapy. Dr. Maroun has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and is involved provincially and nationally in numerous academic and research committees.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Educator

    Dr Anne McCarthy is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and a member of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Ottawa Hospital. She is the Director of the Office of Global Health at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. She is actively involved in Tropical Medicine and International Health including the development of prevention and treatment strategies for malaria and recommendations for travel related vaccine preventable diseases. Dr. McCarthy is the National Coordinator of the Canadian Malaria Network in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Travel Medicine Program and chair of the Malaria Subcommittee¬†of the Committee to Advise on Tropical Medicine and Travel.

    Her clinical interests include directing the Tropical Medicine and International Health Clinic at the General Campus, clinical infectious diseases with emphasis on infections in the intensive care unit and bone marrow transplant patients, as well as malaria and tuberculosis.

    She has a large educational commitment, including undergraduate, postgraduate medical and continuing education teaching in infectious disease, travel medicine, tropical medicine and global health.

    Her research interests include clinical and medical education activities. Clinical research includes infections in compromised hosts, implementation of vaccine delivery programs within a healthcare setting, studies on antimalarial drugs – including tolerability and interactions with concurrent medication (such as antiretroviral drugs for HIV), vaccine efficacy, and compliance with travel medicine recommendations. Her Medical education research focuses on development and evaluation of global health curriculum, as well as the development of learning resources for those undertaking international global health experiences, including the development of the ACTION Global Health website (www.actionglobalhealth.com).

    Dr. Brendan McCormick is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at The Ottawa Hospital and theUniversityofOttawa. His major clinical interests include resistant hypertension, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.  He is medical director of the satellite dialysis units at St. Vincent’s Hospital,WinchesterHospitaland theQueenswayCarletonHospital.

    Dr. McCormick received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Queen‚Äôs University and completed his MD at theUniversity ofToronto where he also completed Core Internal Medicine training followed by a fellowship in Nephrology.¬† Dr. McCormick ‚Äės major focus during fellowship training was on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.¬†¬†¬† He is also certified specialist in Clinical Hypertension with the American Society of Hypertension.¬† He joined theOttawaHospital in 2003 and theUniversity ofOttawa in 2004.

    Dr. McCurdy joined the Department of Medicine, Division of gastroenterology in 2013. He received his PhD in Immunology from Dalhousie University in 2004, and his MD from the University of Ottawa in 2007. He completed his Internal Medicine (2010) and Gastroenterology (2012) training at Dalhousie University. Following this he completed an advanced fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Mayo Clinic, Rochester in 2013.

    His research interests include: understanding the role of cytomegalovirus in the pathogenicity of inflammatory bowel disease and identifying predictors of disease related outcomes in inflammatory bowel disease.

    Dr. McDonald graduated from McGill University (2007) with a B. Sc (Hon) in Microbiology and Immunology. After obtaining her M.D. from the University of Toronto (2011), she completed her residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa (2016). With a special interest in musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain, Dr. McDonald pursued additional fellowship training in Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto, Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (2017).

    Dr. McDonald’s clinical interests include complex musculoskeletal medicine, sport medicine, electrophysiology and comprehensive pain management, including interventional procedures.     Dr David Messika-Zeitoun has been recently appointed to the Department of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology, effective January 2018.

    Dr Messika-Zeitoun graduated from medical school at the University Paris VI (Pitié-Salpétriere) in Paris in 1992. He completed his training in Cardiology in Paris and become assistant professor at Tenon hospital in 1999. After a two-years research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic (2001-2003), he returned to Bichat hospital as a staff member of the division of Cardiology. He completed his PhD in 2009 and he was appointed full Professor of Cardiology in 2013.

    Dr Messika-Zeitoun is a non-invasive cardiologist specialized in echocardiography and Valvular Heart Disease. He has a special interest in imaging and new transcatheter therapies.

    Following the acquisition of her specialty degree in Rheumatology from the University of Ottawa in 2011, Dr. Milman completed a 2-year clinical fellowship in vasculitis and a Master’s degree in clinical epidemiology. She joined the Ottawa Hospital’s Division of Rheumatology in 2013 as clinician-investigator.

    Dr. Milman has established a dedicated vasculitis clinic, which has become a regional referral centre, where consultations are provided for complex vasculitis cases and for research purposes. Dr. Milman also runs the specialized rheumatology/dermatology clinic where patients with skin conditions related to rheumatologic diagnoses are seen together with a dermatologist.

    Dr. Milman is involved in a number of vasculitis-related clinical studies on local, national, and international level. Among her research initiatives are a series of projects aimed to study isolated aortitis, studies involving patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis, and setting up of a local database of patients with different types of vasculitis.

    Dr. Molnar is a specialist in Geriatric Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, an Affiliate Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute Clinical Epidemiology Program, and an Affiliate Scientist in the Elizabeth Bruyere Research Institute.

    Dr. Molnar currently serves as the Medical Director of the Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario, Co-chair of the Champlain Regional Geriatric Advisory Committee, Co-Chair of the Regional Geriatric Programs of Ontario, and is on the Executive of the Canadian Geriatrics Society.     Dr. Mottiar is cross appointed in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Medicine (Division of Palliative Care) at the University of Ottawa where she practices in the operating room, the Ottawa Hospital Pain Clinic and on the Palliative Care Consultation Team.

    Dr. Mottiar is originally from the Ottawa Valley but left to complete her undergraduate degree at McGill University followed by her medical degree at Queen’s University. She then completed both her residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Palliative Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mottiar holds a Masters in Health Sciences (Bioethics) from the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto and has a particular interest in how ethics intersects with end of life care in the perioperative setting.

    Dr. Sunita Mulpuru has recently joined the Department of Medicine, in the Division of Respirology.

    Sunita obtained her medical degree from McMaster University, and completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Respirology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital.

    Following her clinical training she enrolled in the Clinician Investigator Program and completed a Masters of Science in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa. During this time, she developed experience in health services research using large administrative databases. Her Masters Thesis project evaluated the impact of hospital respiratory infection control practices on patient outcomes and resource utilization.

    Sunita practices respiratory medicine at The Ottawa Hospital, and is also a Clinical Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute in the Clinical Epidemiology Program. Her research will focus on evaluating respiratory infection transmission in hospitals and improving the quality of care for patients hospitalized with febrile respiratory illness.

    Dr. Munene obtained his B. com with a specialization in Organizational Behavior prior to completing his studies in undergraduate medical education at McGill University. He went on to pursue a residency in internal medicine at the University of Toronto prior to returning to Ottawa where he completed a two year fellowship in General Internal Medicine.

    During his fellowship, Dr. Munene completed a Master’s degree in Healthcare Quality from Queen’s University. His research interests lie in patient safety and quality improvement in end of life care. Dr. Munene is also heavily involved in medical education, particularly developing a Quality and Patient Safety curriculum for trainees at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher Lecturer

    Dr. Camille Munro is an Assistant Professor and a Clinician-Teacher with the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa, effective August 1, 2012.

    A native of Chester, Nova Scotia, Dr. Munro received her medical degree from Dalhousie University in 1991 following the completion of her undergraduate degree in Chemistry. She did a rotating internship at the Royal Columbian Hospital affiliated with the University of British Columbia. She then moved to Ottawa and worked as a Clinical Assistant in Geriatrics followed by Family Practice for 16 years while raising her children.

    Dr. Munro’s long-time interest in Palliative Care led her to return to the academic setting in 2010 to work as a General Practitioner in Oncology and then in Palliative Care. During this time, she pursued the alternate route of certification for the College of Family Practice certification as well as further supervised clinical training in Palliative Care.

    Dr. Munro’s current interest is to pursue excellence in patient care by assessing quality improvement measures to improve the clinical delivery of palliative care.

  • Sanjay Murthy MD, FRCPC

    Physician Bio

    Dr. Sanjay Murthy is Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Clinician-Investigator in the Division of Gastroenterology. He is a member of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Centre at the General Campus and Director of the Home Parenteral Nutrition Program for The Ottawa Hospital. He completed his M.D. at the University of Ottawa, Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Manitoba and Gastroenterology Residency at the University of Toronto. He subsequently completed fellowships in IBD (Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto), advanced endoscopy (University of Mainz, Germany) and clinical nutrition (Toronto General Hospital). He further completed a M.Sc. in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, during which he conducted a thesis project using Ontario health administrative data at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

    Dr. Murthy’s clinical areas of focus include IBD and clinical nutrition. His research program focuses on the application of clinical epidemiologic methods to study health care questions pertaining to IBD and colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention, particularly with respect to the clinical and cost-effectiveness of current paradigms of care and ways to improve the efficiency and quality of delivery of health care services.
