    Dr. Chantel Barrett has been recently appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of Neurology, effective September 2015.

    Dr. Barrett obtained her B. Sc. in biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland prior to completing her studies in medical school.  She began her Neurology training thereafter, and served as chief resident in 2013.  She moved to Ottawa in 2014 to complete a fellowship in Movement Disorders at the University of Ottawa.

    Dr. Barrett practices Neurology at the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic at the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital.  She is also a Clinical Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and is currently completing research studies in developing a decision making aid for patients with hemifacial spasm and investigating the role of levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel on the non-motor symptoms of patients with advanced Parkinson’s Disease (INSIGHTS trial).

    Isabelle Bence-Bruckler is an Associate Professor at The Ottawa Hospital. She is a Clinical Hematologist and member of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program. She is the Clinical Director of the Lymphoma Program and of the Malignant Hematology Trials Group. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board of Lymphoma Foundation Canada and a member of the Ontario Hematology Provincial Disease Site Group.

    Faculty Career Path – Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Khadija Bhimji is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa.

    Dr. Bhimji is a Palliative Care physician with the Palliative Care Consultation Service at both The Ottawa Hospital and Queensway Carleton Hospital. She also provides consultation services for outpatients at The Ottawa Hospital’s Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre located at the Queensway Carleton Hospital site.

    Dr. Bhimji completed her medical school at the University of British Columbia in 1990. She continued her studies in the Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residency programs from 1990-1993 at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Bhimji worked as an independent family practitioner and as a General Practitioner in Medical Oncology in the Ottawa area from 1993-2002. She then opted to pursue fellowship training from 2003-2004 in the Palliative Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa.

    In February 2004, Dr. Bhimji joined the Division of Palliative Care, University of Ottawa. She currently focuses her work on her clinical responsibilities and is involved in teaching learners through our Palliative Medicine Residency Program with the University of Ottawa. Her main interest focuses on palliative care for non-malignant diseases.

He completed his Medical School, Master in Physiology and Biophysics and Internal Medicine training at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec. He did his Medical Oncology residency at the University of Ottawa in 2016, followed by a clinical research fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.     Faculty Career Path: Clinician Scientist

    Head, Malignant Hematology and Blood & Marrow Transplant Program

    Dr. Christopher Bredeson received his medical degree (cum laude) from the University of Ottawa. His postdoctorate training included an internship and residency in internal medicine at The Ottawa Hospital, as well as a residency in clinical hematology and a fellowship in the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He holds a Masters degree in Clinical Epidemiology also from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Bredeson spent a decade at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he was a Scientific Director at the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. While there he participated in the establishment of the NIH funded Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network and designed and ran several of their early trials. Dr. Bredeson returned to Ottawa in 2011 to run the Malignant Hematology and BMT Programme at The Ottawa Hospital. His interests focus on clinical research related to improving results of allogeneic stem cell transplantation; he also has a growing interest in issues related to health care delivery. Dr. Bredeson is active in research education and has mentored faculty members, residents, and medical students. Dr. Bredeson has published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals, has received several research grants, contracts, and awards and has served as principal investigator on several studies. Dr. Bredeson is currently the President Elect for the CBMTG.

    Dr. Ari Breiner completed his medical studies at McGill University in 2005 and Neurology residency at both McGill University and the University of Toronto.  After EMG/Neuromuscular fellowships at Columbia University and the University of Toronto, he pursued a Masters degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research.  He was appointed to the faculty of medicine at the University of Toronto in 2014 and moved to the University of Ottawa in 2017. He holds peer-reviewed grants for the study of neuromuscular diseases and has a particular interest in the role of imaging in diagnosis and management.

    Faculty Career Path: Clinician Teacher

    Dr. Pierre Antoine Brown graduated from medical school at the University of Ottawa and completed residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Nephrology, both at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Science in Medical Informatics, from Northwestern University. His clinical interests include hemodialysis and general nephrology. He is actively involved in medical informatics in the Division of Nephrology and is worked on the development and implementation of a clinical database to track all Progressive Renal Insufficiency Clinic patients and their clinical outcomes. He is also overseeing the local aspects of the Dialysis Measurement, Analysis and Reporting System; an ICES database aimed at improving dialysis patient care and access to home therapies for ESRD. He is the physician-champion for patient safety and quality within the Division of Nephrology and continues to participate in many quality improvement projects in the division.

    He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals on varied topics including HIV and peritoneal dialysis. His current research interests include the application of information technology to improve health-care outcomes and CQI projects

    Dr. Arianne Buchan has recently been appointed to The Department of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, effective September 2017.

    Dr. Buchan obtained her Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences and Doctor of Medicine at Queen’s University.  She went on to complete her Internal Medicine training at the University of Ottawa, followed by her fellowship in Infectious Diseases.  Given her interest in infections in transplant and critically ill patients, she sought out further training to develop a practice in this specialized area.  Dr. Buchan pursued a fellowship in Transplant Infectious Diseases and the Immunocompromised Host at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.  After which, she completed the Program of Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health in Boston.  She is currently completing her Masters of Science in Epidemiology also at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health.

    Dr. Buchan will at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital with a specialty interest in Infectious Diseases in solid organ and stem-cell transplant patients.  Her clinical and research interests lie in screening for infectious diseases prior to transplant and in clinical outcomes related to this patient population.

    Dr. Shirley H. Bush is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa, a Clinical Scientist at the √Člisabeth Bruy√®re Research Institute and a Palliative Care physician at Bruy√®re Continuing Care, Ottawa.

    Her primary research interests include delirium, quality-of-life assessments in advanced cancer patients and medical undergraduate education. She is the principal investigator of an AIME grant, ‚ÄėEvaluating the New Medical Undergraduate Palliative Care Curriculum at the University of Ottawa‚Äô.

    Dr. Bush obtained her medical degree from St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, University of London and vocationally trained as a General Practitioner in London, UK. She then gained experience working in different palliative care, oncology and paediatric units in New Zealand, and completed specialist training in Palliative Medicine with a further year of palliative medicine in Sydney, Australia. She subsequently worked as a Senior Staff Specialist in Palliative Care for Southern Health Care Network, Melbourne, Australia for 8 years with her role including consultative/ liaison work in addition to working in McCulloch House, a busy tertiary level inpatient unit. During this period, she was also the Palliative Care Physician for South East Palliative Care, a specialist community palliative care organization.

    Dr. Bush completed a year as Visiting Scientist in the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA, with Dr. Eduardo Bruera before taking up her current position in Ottawa in April 2009.

    As a pastime, she is a passionate Argentine Tango and Flamenco dancer.

    Dr. Byszewski is Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Division of Geriatric Medicine. obtained her medical degree from the University of Ottawa, where she also continued her training in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. She obtained a Master’s of Education in Health Professions from OISE (UT).

    Dr. Byszewski’s areas of interest include medical education including translation of knowledge and evaluation. Dr. Byszewski is involved with developing and teaching communication skills and professionalism in the medical curriculum, in her role as Director of Professionalism, Undergraduate Curriculum, University of Ottawa. She is also acore competency expert for the ePortfolio program and leads Faculty Development for this program .

    Dr. Byszewski has been involved in leadinginitiaives in geriatric medicine inosteoporosis, and driving/caregiving issues in dementia. She has led the development and implementation of the Cognitive Change care map in the Geriatric Day Hospital . She chaired a task group for the Dementia Network of Ottawa that produced the Driving and Dementia Toolkit, a resource manual for health care workers dealing with this issue. The toolkit has been formally evaluated and is now available in generic form for adaptation in different regions, with a recently updated 3rd edition. A companion Patient and Caregiver Driving Toolkit has also been developed. They are both available at www.rgpeo.com.
