Undergraduate Medical Education

The Department of Medicine provides significant leadership and teaching faculty to the undergraduate curriculum. Most notably, Dr. Melissa Forgie, is the Vice Dean, and a Hematologist in the Department. Annually, the Department provides approximately 30% of the teachers for the Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum by contributing to formal teaching as tutors of case-based learning sessions, lectures, workshops, teaching physical examination skills and mentoring e-portfolios. Leadership roles include Assistant Dean – Admissions; Chair of the Curriculum Review Committee; Unit Chairs; Content Experts; Directors of Professionalism; Clinical Skills; Link Block, and the Back to Basics Course.

The Department is also responsible for organizing and implementing Stage 2 of undergraduate medical education including the coordination of the Year 3 medical clerkship and Year 4 Selective/Electives. The third year clerkship is a six-week rotation primarily organized through the General Medicine Clinical Teaching units at the General and Civic campuses of the Ottawa Hospital. Fourth year students rotate through subspecialty services during a two-week Selective and many Elective students participate in rotations in various ambulatory and clinical departmental services.

Electives

We offer electives on our clinical teaching units, as well as our consultation service, at both campuses. We accept local, national, and international students. Elective students will have the opportunity to provide direct clinical care while working with the many general internists on service.

All electives requests are processed through the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. For more information on how to apply for Department of Medicine electives, visit electives.uOttawa.ca. For more information on clerkship, please email memccallum@toh.ca
