Clinical Highlights in Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology at the Ottawa Department of Medicine strives to provide world class clinical care to residents of Ottawa & Eastern Ontario who suffer from kidney diseases. Our division offers a full complement of specialty ambulatory clinics at the Jindal Kidney Care Centre: General Nephrology Hypertension, Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease, and Progressive Renal Insufficiency. These clinics are lead by physicians with world class expertise. Inpatients are admitted to the clinical teaching unit, where a strong multidisciplinary care plan has been developed. The Division of Nephrology also maintains its independent expertise in critical care nephrology and, in close collaboration with the Intensivists, is solely responsible for providing renal replacement services, including SLED and CRRT, to all intensive care areas at the Ottawa Hospital and The University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Our division oversees one of the largest, and best organized, hemodialysis program in Canada, with more than 650 prevalent patients. Patients are expertly cared for in our many in-center and satellite hemodialysis units. In close collaboration with the divisions of Vascular Surgery and Radiology, Advanced Practices Nurses and physicians in our division have developed what is arguably the best vascular access program in Canada.

The home dialysis unit provides both peritoneal and home hemodialysis care for more than 170 patients. We have been a national leader in the development of a successful PD catheter insertion program.

The Division of Nephrology Renal Transplantation program performs approximately 70 renal transplants per year and provides care for more than 600 renal transplant patients. The program serves as a tertiary referral centre for the Renfrew and Sudbury area. The program provides not only best practice comprehensive care to renal transplant patients, but is also very active in clinical research with ongoing clinical trials, many having received extensive CIHR funding.

These clinical programs support our excellent, fully accredited subspecialty training program as well as a large Clinical fellowship program. Our fellows have enjoyed tremendous success at national exams in Canada and abroad.

The Division of Nephrology sees clinical care as a dynamic process and continually innovates to ensure that patients receive provide world class clinical care.
