 Overview

The Division of Hematology has three pillars of strength: Thrombosis, Transfusion Medicine and Malignant Hematology. These pillars are focused on:

  1. Provision of high quality and safe cost effective patient care,
  2. Developing tommorow’s leader and
  3. Practice Changing Research

This past spring, the Division consolidated under a single roof in “The Ottawa Blood Disease Center of Excellence” strategically located in a new Practice Changing Research building (between Roger Guindon Hall and The Ottawa Hospital General Campus). Our Division and its members are very excited by the synergies and collegiality that this proximity will generate.

The Division’s members deliver:

  1. Tertiary and Quaternary Blood Care in over 30,000 outpatient visits per year and over 2000 inpatient stays including >100 bone marrow transplants per year,
  2. Blood Education from the medical student level to developing tomorrow’s leaders in sub-specialty hematology including our world leading Thrombosis fellowship and Transfusion fellowship and
  3. Practice Changing Blood Research in Thrombosis and Transfusion, 2 of The Ottawa Hospital’s academic priorities, with over 10 million in peer reviewed funding from >8 clinician scientists delivering a New England Journal of Medicine publication q2 yearly.

Research

Our research programs have led to important changes in clinical practice. These achievements are a result of team work. The team consists of 18 Hematologists, 2-4 Thrombosis Fellows, 2-4 BMT fellows, 4-8 Hematology residents, >25 clinical research personnel, 16 assistants and 10 clinical allied health professionals.

Education

The Hematology Residency Training Program is proud to provide an extremely strong training experience that is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The residents that complete our program have a sound knowledge base and become competent and self reliant hematologists after a two year training program whose focus is optimizing learning experiences.  Our program benefits from having a strong Bone Marrow Transplant Program (in particular, a second-to-none inter-disciplinary team providing innovative, high quality, ethical and empathic care) as well as an internationally renowned Thrombosis Program (with world-class research funding and productivity).  Few programs in the country can boast strengths in both these content areas of clinical hematology (malignant hematology and thrombosis) and these two important aspects of academic life (patient care and research).

The division of Hematology offers many diverse elective opportunities for internal and visiting clerkship students and residents.

Patient Care

The Thrombosis Program delivers outpatient management of DVT/PE and anticoagulant therapy through over 15,000 clinic visits per year. This program has led innovations which have permitted the transition of care of these patients from an inpatient to an outpatient setting through more safe and cost-effective diagnostic and treatment strategies.

The Ottawa Hospital BMT program, the first program accredited in Canada, celebrated its 10th year of Foundation for the Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy (FAHCT) accreditation. Furthermore, after the most recent accreditation visit/report, we learned that the accreditation score was the highest ever recorded for any program in North America FACHT accreditation, highlighting the clinical excellence of our BMT group.

The Ottawa Hospital BMT program, in addition to be being one of only a handful of centers to treat multiple sclerosis with autologous stem cell transplants has expanded this innovative approach to other life threatening autoimmune diseases for patients from across Canada.
