Geriatric Medicine Postgraduate Elective Opportunities

Four-week rotations are available for 70-75 Residents per year. Geriatrics is a core rotation for Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residents. Trainees in Care of the Elderly, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Anesthesia and Neurology programs rotate as well on Geriatrics. Electives are available on a first come basis. An attempt is made to give each resident exposure to all the elements of our Program:

  • The Geriatric Day Hospital (outpatient clinic)
  • The Inpatient Unit
  • The Consult Service

In addition to one-on-one teaching at bedside, we provide at least eight formal teaching sessions each block on topics pertinent to Geriatrics, which include Resident presentations. The Residents attend Geriatric Academic Rounds once per week and Regional Geriatric Rounds approximately once per block. The elective may also include observations of assessments by our Allied Health Staff; Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Dietician. We provide opportunity for residents to participate in a Rural Clinic or Geriatric Psychiatry assessment, as appropriate. Residents are given online resources and reading material to assist in developing a Geriatric orientation to care of patients in this population, and they have opportunity to interact with a team approach to most effectively address the older person’s needs.
