Clinical Highlights in Endocrinology & Metabolism

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism provides specialized inpatient and outpatient care for a population of just over one million people. The Foustanellas Endocrine and Diabetes Centre, located at the Riverside Campus, is the major referral centre for Eastern Ontario. There are approximately 20,000 patient visits per year for a wide variety of endocrine and metabolic conditions and complex diabetes care. In addition to diabetes and general endocrinology clinics, there are specialized clinics for lipid disorders, thyroid cancer, osteoporosis/bone metabolism, pituitary tumours and medical complications of pregnancy. We have strong links to other clinical departments to foster collaborative care for our patients including neurosurgery, cardiology, nephrology and obstetrics/gynecology for more information go to www.ottawahospital.on.ca

Our diabetes team members, including our diabetes nurse educators, dieticians and physicians, combine experience and expertise to provide a program of education and multidisciplinary care to maximize patient ability to self-manage their diabetes.  We are the major insulin pump training centre in the region, starting 37 patients on an insulin pump each year.

In-patient diabetes management has been a priority identified by the Ottawa Hospital on the three year quality plan for 2008-2011. This has enabled many new initiatives including expanded diabetes nurse specialist resources, pre-printed insulin orders and improved transition of care from specialist to community physician.
