Undergraduate Elective Opportunities

There is a very high demand for electives in the Division of Dermatology, as our teachers are highly recommended because of their focus on the academic medicine.  In order to accommodate as many elective requests as possible, we have limited the number of weeks permitted to 2 weeks per academic year for 3rd and 4th yr students.  Elective students will follow a rotation during their time with us where they will be exposed to general, pediatric and sub-specialty clinics with several preceptors.

Important Notice

MS1 & MS2 – will not be accepting electives for levels 1 & 2 medical students. A possible suggestion for the students would be to contact dermatologists in their private practices for observorship. If first year (10 hours) or second year (20 hours) medical students are interested in gaining exposure to dermatology, we have set aside July to mid-August.  Please contact dermatology@toh.ca in late May or early June of each academic year.

Family Medicine Residents – will accept between January to June (first-come, first-served basis)

Internal Medicine Residents – will accept between January to June (first-come, first-served basis)

CaRMS Candidates

  • MS3 & MS4 – all Canadian University students – 4 year program (2 weeks only) – mid-August to December, our program can only accommodate up to a maximum of 4 medical students every 2  weeks during that time.  This includes University of Ottawa Students and/or Other Universities (maximum of 4).  From January to June of each academic year, our program can accommodate one student only every 2 weeks as space for off-service residents has also been reserved for this time period as well.
  • MS2 & MS3 – from McMaster University & University of Calgary – 3 year program (2 weeks only) – mid-August to December, program can only accommodate up to a maximum of 4 medical students every 2  weeks during that time.  This includes University of Ottawa Students and/or Other Universities (maximum of 4).   From January to June of each academic year, program can accommodate one student only every 2 weeks as space for off-service residents has also been reserved for this time period as well.
  • Electives for IMGs are completed in mid-January to end of June of each year.
    • CSA students are now selected by random allocation process (lottery) through the Portal. The steps are: students register to show their interest in an elective period, we run a lottery to select a set number of students, the selected students can then send their application to be processed.
    • Students who are interested in an elective from January to April (2019 for example) would register and be selected in July (2018). Those that are interested in an elective from May to June (2019) would register and be selected in November (2018).
If you require further information about our program please contact Anne Grose, Dermatology Program Administrator, at agrose@toh.on.ca.

If you are a University of Ottawa medical student wishing to book an elective, please send an e-mail to dermatology@toh.on.ca specifying your year, requested elective weeks and contact information.  Your elective will be confirmed or denied (if lack of space is available) by e-mail outlining the details of schedules, evaluations, locations etc.

If you are a non-University of Ottawa medical student wishing to book an elective, your request must first be considered by the undergraduate coordinator at the University of Ottawa.  Please do not contact the division directly as an elective cannot be booked until the application has been approved by the University. All applications must be completed via the AFMC Student Portal at the following link: https://www.afmcstudentportal.ca/.

Once the University has forwarded your application, you will be contacted by e-mail from the division outlining the details of schedules, evaluations, locations etc if your requested elective time is approved.
