Med Student Career Night 2014 – Department of Med Continues to Support UGME

For the fourth year in a row the Department of Medicine supported UGME by hosting it’s medical student career night. In collaboration with the student lead Internal Medicine Interest Group, the Department organized physician speakers from several of it’s subspecialties to¬†present information on what it’s like to practice on a day-to-day basis.

80 medical students attended the up close and personal Q&A round table sessions. As part of their career exploration they were given the opportunity to ask questions like why choose a specific specialty, what physicians find most rewarding about their practice, what attributes are important in anyone considering a specific specialty, and how to balance career and personal life.

Many thanks to Brian Keller, Damarijot Otal, Nikita Malhtra, Cong Thanh Nguyen, the uOttawa student Internal Medicine Interest Group Execs for their contributions to the evening and to Drs Gwynne Jones (Critical Care), Ken Kobayashi (Dermatology), Peter Walker (Endocrinology & Metabolism), Cathy Code (Core Internal Medicine), Phil Wells (Dept Chair), Melissa Forgie (Hematology, Dean UGME), Steve Nadler (Nephrology), Gonzalo Alvarez (Respirology), Michael Abunassar (Core Internal Medicine Resident) and Habibat Garuba (Core Internal Medicine Resident) for donating their valuable time, insight and great sense of humour.

These encounters with our students are career shaping!
