  1. Understand the geographic and simian source of HIV-1
  2. Review the role of parenteral transmission in the early emergence of HIV-1
  3. Explain how colonialism, urbanisation, and the development of prostitution, facilitated the early emergence of HIV-1
  4. Understand how the virus eventually moved out of Africa
