Successful Candidates for 2012 Distinguished Teacher Program

Congratulations to Drs Elizabeth Pringle, Karima Khamisa, Ann Bugeja, Christopher Skinner and Nav Saloojee.  These five Department of Medicine members have been selected to participate in the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, Distinguished Teacher Program. These physicians will join the 2011 inductees Michael Froeschl, Louise Laramée and Heather MacLean already enrolled in this innovative 2 year program.

Program Overview

The goal of this program is to select and recognize excellent teachers, to provide them with extensive development and teaching opportunities as well as invite them to become part of a community of dedicated teachers within the Faculty.

Successful applicants will participate in a week long Faculty Development Course with a focus on Pedagogical Theory, new Learning Strategies, Simulation, Videotaping and review, Clinical Skills Teaching, and a session on Scholarship in Teaching and Education.

Over the 2011-2012 academic year, the Distinguished Teacher Program participant will provide 120 hours of dedicated medical student teaching. This can be longitudinal (clinical skills teaching over the entire year), discipline focused (teach all renal content for 3 weeks) or method based (tutor Cased Based Learning sessions over the year) or teach simulation skills throughout the year, or a combination of the above.

The program will offer ongoing mentoring and further enhancement of teaching skills as well as resources for scholarship in teaching in collaboration with the Academy for Innovation in Medical Education (AIME). Support will also be available for attendance at a Medical Education conference.

Participants who successfully complete the first year will be invited back for a second and final year. They will provide 160 hours of teaching to medical students and become senior members of the community of teachers. Graduates of the program will be a Distinguished Teacher of the Faculty of Medicine and be recognized at the Awards Ceremony. This designation will be highly regarded in application for promotion.

Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Teachers will be offered the opportunity to apply for a two year Teaching Chair to allow them to focus on scholarship and innovation in teaching.
